If there's one regret Eddie Jones<\/a> has from his tumultuous Rugby World Cup<\/a> campaign, it's telling the media to give themselves an uppercut.<\/p>\n

Jones, by and large, had been mild-mannered up until the tournament. However, as he readied himself to board the plane for France, he fired off at "negative" questions from the attending media<\/a>.<\/p>\n

With the benefit of hindsight, Jones said he regrets those comments.<\/p>\n

The Wallabies'<\/a> so-called "smash and grab" campaign wound up with them bombing out before the quarter-finals \u2013 a first in the 10 editions of the Rugby World Cup.<\/p>\n

"I probably need to give myself an uppercut, don't I," said Jones when reminded of the barb.<\/p>\n

"Well again, mate, I didn't like the way that media conference was portrayed and I'm allowed to say that.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It probably wasn't the wisest thing to say. Sometimes you say things in the heat of the moment that you regret, mate."<\/p>\n

The terse comments (video below) came off the back of selecting the youngest side of any Wallabies team for a Rugby World Cup tilt.<\/p>\n

The average age of the team was just 26.<\/p>\n

Of the 25 players, 15 of them had five caps or fewer. Of those 15, three went into the Rugby World Cup uncapped.<\/p>\n

Jones still backs the call he made to select youth over experience.<\/p>\n

He was repeatedly criticised for leaving experienced heads like former skipper Michael Hooper and Quade Cooper behind \u2013 a decision the results would suggest wasn't justified.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, Jones stood strong.<\/p>\n

"Tough calls," he reasoned.<\/p>\n

"I just decided we needed to move forward and we needed to give a young group of players a chance to express themselves and obviously it was difficult for them.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"We weren't up at the level we need to be at, but I don't regret it at all \u2013 and they're choices you make.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Sometimes you have to make hard choices that sometimes reverberate on yourself personally, but are good for the organisation.<\/p>\n

"I came to the Wallabies (with a) short preparation time. I had to make a quick decision on what we'd do.<\/p>\n

"I had a look at the resources we had, the players we had, I made the decision. We've got to go with youth.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"That's the best option for Australia going forward. I made that decision and the results of the World Cup weren't how we hoped, but I still think I've made the right decision."<\/p>\n

Cooper played his final Test in the Wallabies jersey against New Zealand.\u00a0<\/p>\n

His final act of that match was dropping the ball at the death when Australia was chasing a three-point deficit.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"We had them on toast 17-3. We couldn't finish the game off," said Jones.<\/p>\n

"Let's be quite factual about that. I just thought we're not gonna get anywhere with that group of players.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I probably thought they'd maximised themselves out and we had that group of players for a period of time.<\/p>\n

"I always go back to the definition of insanity mate \u2013 keep doing the same thing, expect different results. So I tried something different, went for youth, and it will have its favourable results further down the track.<\/p>\n

"Well, everyone's got their own judgment, haven't we? And they're allowed to have that judgment," he added.<\/p>\n

"My choice was that I decided to go with youth and I stand by that because we've got a lot of good young players there, lots of good young players who are really gonna benefit from that experience of the World Cup and go forward to 2027 World Cup."<\/p>\n

Jones named Angus Bell, Taniela Tupou, Nick Frost, Rob Valetini, Tom Hooper, Fraser McReight, Tate McDermott, Ben Donadlson, Mark Nawaqanitawase, and Max Jorgenson as the the "nucleus" of the next Wallabies team.<\/p>\n

"Sometimes when you have change, everyone hates change because it's uncomfortable. Everyone likes the status quo," said Jones.<\/p>\n

"We had the courage, whether it be the right courage to make the choice that we were gonna go with the younger squad.\u00a0<\/p>\n
