ANALYSIS:<\/strong> "People love this sort of drama."<\/p>\n

That \ufeffwas Eddie Jones' last line from a 24 minute press conference in which he said he was still committed to Australian rugby.<\/a><\/p>\n

He's correct that a hungry press pack \ufeffwill always flock to a coach in crisis but many people that really matter in the game – fans, players and volunteers – have been appalled by the Jones soap opera.<\/p>\n

They are not loving this sort of drama.<\/p>\n

Jones again took responsibility for the worst ever Wallabies performance at a Rugby World Cup<\/a>, failing to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in 10 tournaments.<\/p>\n

But then he also added that he wouldn't do anything differently and that it was the right call to axe several of the country's most decorated players.<\/p>\n

It just doesn't stack up.<\/p>\n

\ufeffNo-one expected the Wallabies to win the tournament but reaching the quarter-finals was a very achievable bare minimum.<\/p>\n

Instead it was men against boys and the weekend's thrilling quarter-finals further highlighted the gulf between Australia and the elite.<\/p>\n

Jones' claim that he has now put \ufeffAustralian rugby in "a great position" to attack a home World Cup in 2027 is laughable.<\/p>\n

There are only a handful of locked in building blocks – Angus Bell, Mark Nawaqanitawse and Nick Frost spring to mind – with a host of question marks and scarred greenhorns elsewhere.<\/p>\n

Of course the most pressing question \ufeffto be fired at Jones at his beloved Coogee Oval was the Japanese elephant in the room<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Despite multiple well sourced reports that Jones indeed had a Zoom interview to replace Jamie Joseph, the coach continued to deny.<\/p>\n

It wasn't always convincing.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Not that I'm aware of," Jones replied when asked if he had spoken to third parties (recruitment agencies or executive search parties) about the Japan job.<\/p>\n

OK then.<\/p>\n

Jones noticeably didn't wear \ufeffany Wallabies kit to the stand up and didn't exactly fight tooth and nail to keep the job he is contracted to until 2027.<\/p>\n

He blamed the country's development systems for poor performances which again didn't marry up with his "smash and grab, we're going to win the World Cup" boasts.<\/p>\n

All of this mess and noise puts Rugby Australia between a rock and a hard place.<\/p>\n

Jones denied reports he is lined up for a second interview with Japan in November and you would hope RA's Hamish McLennan and Phil Waugh have been provided with a full account behind closed doors.<\/p>\n

The next step is a review into the French flop as well as a wider investigation into the code's woes.<\/p>\n

Jones believed he maintained the support of RA \ufeffand another hefty coaching payout on the back of Dave Rennie would be an awful look.<\/p>\n

But would it be the right thing to do amid a potentially toxic environment, with fans having lost trust in the great redeemer?<\/p>\n

Ready made, home made replacements are not knocking down the door but the likes of Michael Cheika, Dan McKellar \ufeffand Stephen Larkham all have claims – not to mention the foreign brigade.<\/p>\n
