Jordan Thompson<\/a> upset ninth-ranked Alexander Zverev<\/a> 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round of the Japan Open for his second win over a top-10 opponent this season<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 29-year-old Australian saved four of the five break points he faced to claim his first career win over Zverev after losing their only previous meeting six years ago.<\/p>\n

He also beat seventh-ranked Stefanos Tsitsipas at Indian Wells in March<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI fought off 0-40 first game and I really got into the match after that,\u201d the 60th-ranked Thompson said.<\/p>\n

"But I held on, I was playing an unpredictable style of tennis, and I think he didn\u2019t handle it that well in the first set and adapted in the second. But I somehow hung around.<\/p>\n

"He's a quality player, I don't need to say what he's done in his career.<\/p>\n

"I haven't done anywhere near as much as he has but when I get on the court with these guys, I've got to believe that I can beat them," Thompson added.<\/p>\n

"If you don't believe it, you may as well not be out here, so I'm just really enjoying the challenge."<\/p>\n

The Australian has faced some battles with his body in two out of his last three tournaments, exiting the US Open and Chengdu after retiring hurt.<\/p>\n

But he showed no signs of those injuries in his triumph in Tokyo.<\/p>\n

"I'll get better," Thompson noted.<\/p>\n

"Obviously I felt it was pretty good today, but we will see how I recover."<\/p>\n

Speaking after the defeat, Zverev said: "Today I played horrible.<\/p>\n

"He played quite good, he served quite good, but it's just a very, very bad match for me. I don't know what to say."<\/p>\n

Thompson will next play either Shanghai Masters semi-finalist Ben Shelton or qualifier Taro Daniel.<\/p>\n

The other three Australians in action all lost as eighth-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime defeated Aleksander Vukic 7-6 (3), 6-7 (2), 6-2, while Mackenzie McDonald beat Max Purcell 7-5, 6-4 and Sebastian Ofner outlasted Christopher O\u2019Connell 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5), 7-5.<\/p>\n

Fifth-seeded Tommy Paul plays Daniel Altmaier in a late match.<\/p>\n

Top-seeded Taylor Fritz plays his first-round match against Cameron Norrie, while second-seeded Casper Ruud meets wild-card entry Yosuke Watanuki.<\/p>\n
