A couple of cricket greats questioned Australian<\/a> talisman Mitchell Starc<\/a> over what appeared to be an intimidatory tactic during the World Cup<\/a> win against Sri Lanka<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe towering left-arm pace bowler warned opening batter Kusal Perera about leaving the non-striker's crease too early during the first over of the match in Lucknow.<\/p>\n

Starc thundered in to bowl but then halted in his delivery stride, instead turning to glare at Perera and telling him to stay in his crease.<\/p>\n

\ufeffCricket rules allow bowlers to run out the non-striker if they leave their crease to gain an advantage. The mode of dismissal is colloquially referred to as a Mankad and, while legal, is still frowned upon by some.<\/p>\n

But Starc has a history of threatening to Mankad\ufeff opponents, last summer telling South Africa's Theunis de Bruyn to "stay in your crease mate, it's not that hard".<\/p>\n

He was again filthy on Monday night when he believed Perera was attempting to gain an advantage.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"That's fair enough, he's told the umpire now he's told the batter, stay in your crease at that end… a very eventful first over," commentator Nasser Hussain said.<\/p>\n

But Starc proceeded to do the same thing twice more during his opening spell.<\/p>\n

He refused to attempt a Mankad but continued to warn Perera about leaving his crease.<\/p>\n

\"Play\u00a0paused\u00a0as\u00a0awnings\u00a0collapse\"<\/p>\n

Aussie great Shane Watson, however, didn't necessarily agree it was a good idea.<\/p>\n

"One thing I don't get about this with Mitchell Starc is he's burning a lot of energy," Watson said in commentary.<\/p>\n

Former New Zealand\ufeff player Ian Smith agreed it was a confusing tactic from Starc.<\/p>\n

"It's three times that he's pulled out of his delivery stride… it suggests to me there are a lot of things going through his mind apart from getting the ball down the other end," Smith said.<\/p>\n

"If he's looking at a batsman being six inches out of his crease, maximum, at point of delivery… I'm all for being aggressive and being in the game, but three times?\ufeff"<\/p>\n

Starc ended up taking 2-43 as Australia rolled Sri Lanka for 209, and then chased it down with five wickets in hand.<\/p>\n
