England\ufeff's astounding capitulation at the hands of Afghanistan<\/a> in the 50-over World Cup<\/a> has, as expected, brought about a tsunami of backlash in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n

UK reporters and former England cricketers have piled on after the reigning ODI World Cup champions suffered a 69-run defeat to Afghanistan in Delhi.<\/p>\n

Jos Buttler<\/a>'s men lost to a country that had been riding a 14-game, eight-year World Cup losing streak.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Former England quick Steven Finn described the scenes as "utter carnage" on the BBC's Test Match Special\ufeff.<\/em><\/p>\n

Simon Burnton wrote in the UK Guardian that England was "profoundly outplayed by Afghanistan".<\/p>\n

"How quickly hard-fought reputations are lost," Burnton wrote.<\/p>\n

"England arrived in India bearing both of the game's most important white-ball trophies and an aura of only marginal vincibility, but a fortnight later they are just another team, and not a particularly good one at that."<\/p>\n

England's heavy losses to New Zealand<\/a> and Afghanistan in its first three matches of the tournament have put the side in grave danger of failing to advance from the round-robin phase.<\/p>\n

"They dismissed the nine-wicket hammering by New Zealand as an aberration, before Bangladesh failed to punish them for a lame final 10 overs with the bat in Dharamshala," wrote Lawrence Booth in the UK Daily Mail.<\/p>\n

"But the conservatism that once blighted English cricket seems to have returned. England had a chance here to blood either Gus Atkinson or David Willey, or both. Instead, [Chris] Woakes \u2014 one of the heroes of the Ashes comeback \u2014 has made himself unselectable, along with Sam Curran.<\/p>\n

"Woakes has now taken 2-135 at this World Cup, and Curran 2-122. Their combined figures here were 8-0-87-0. All the while, Atkinson has been firing rockets in the nets under the approving eye of bowling coach David Saker."<\/p>\n

Katya Witney of Wisden wrote that the crushing defeat to Afghanistan\ufeff, the ninth-ranked ODI team, was an "implosion" that had been "brewing" throughout the early part of England's campaign.<\/p>\n

"Woakes' opening three-over spells in the tournament so far read 0-27 against New Zealand, 1-37 against Bangladesh and 0-31 against Afghanistan," Witney added.<\/p>\n

"Far from England's Mr Reliable with the new ball in ODI cricket, as he's been for so many years, Woakes has thus far been a liability.<\/p>\n

"Couple that with a willingness to view Curran as a solution to their lack of depth with both bat and ball and England's attack looks far short of one that could reach the semi-finals of a World Cup, let alone win it."<\/p>\n

Former England captain Michael Atherton also gave a grim assessment of the team's campaign.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"England haven't bowled well enough and teams have got off to flyers against them," Atherton said on Sky Sports.<\/p>\n

"There are reasons; many of the players are undercooked in terms of cricketing time, time in ODIs.<\/p>\n

"But they have not hit the ground running and have made things very difficult for themselves now.<\/p>\n

"I think England started badly today. They were sloppy. Five wides to start, Curran giving away a free hit in the early overs, a misfield from [Jonny] Bairstow that went for four.<\/p>\n

"They just looked a bit off the pace and that set the tone. They were always chasing the game from that point on."<\/p>\n

But\ufeff England's demise is Afghanistan's joy.<\/p>\n

Rashid Khan and company wore beaming smiles as they celebrated victory.<\/p>\n

Finn applauded the underdogs.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Afghanistan have put a lot of other teams on notice today," Finn said.<\/p>\n

"They're very dangerous, they've got a lot of good players and if they piece it together then they're going to win a number of games through this tournament and upset people along the way."<\/p>\n
