Once upon a time American fight fans had to scour the internet to find news on Tim Tszyu<\/a> but a deal with Showtime has changed all that, with the Aussie's win over Brian Mendoza<\/a> attracting considerable attention.<\/p>\n

Tszyu (24-0) solidified his status in the super welterweight division with a dominant unanimous decision win to retain his WBO title<\/a> and the American market again had the chance to witness the only other fighter at 154 lbs that poses a legitimate threat to Jermell Charlo.<\/p>\n

And most of them were left convinced by Tszyu's ring smarts and snappy punches, vouching for his place among the elite fighters in the world.<\/p>\n

Star fighter Shakur Stevenson, who tipped Mendoza to win ahead of the bout, posted on X: "I was wrong bout (sic) Tim Tszyu he looked better then I thought he was last night."<\/p>\n

ESPN's Mike Coppinger said: "Strong performance from Tim Tszyu with the unanimous decision victory over Brian Mendoza (116-112, 116-111 and 117-111.) He's must-see TV. "Never takes a step backward. Methodical pressure. Impressive win over a very tough and game Brian Mendoza. Tszyu's power is different.<\/p>\n

"Tszyu possesses serious snap on his shots, the kind of punches that thud when they connect. His punches just sound damaging — and they were. Mendoza's face ripped apart under the duress with cuts under his right eye and over his left eye.<\/p>\n

"Tszyu has star qualities and talks a big game."<\/p>\n

Elliot Worsell of Boxing News added: "Clearly, Tszyu, a chip off the old block, is keen to test himself against the best. Moreover, as shown tonight against Mendoza, 22-3 (16), and in previous fights, he has no fear of staying active and taking risks during the wait for the fight that will, one suspects, ultimately define him.<\/p>\n

\"Tszyu<\/p>\n

"That, of all the things that make Tszyu such a force at super-welterweight, is perhaps the one aspect that shouts louder than the rest."<\/p>\n

Keith Idec of Boxingscene wrote: "Tszyu didn't beat Albuquerque's Mendoza (22-3, 16 KOs) as easily as he handled Tony Harrison and Carlos Ocampo in his previous two appearances, mostly because Mendoza has power that made him dangerous throughout their bout and showed a granite chin.<\/p>\n

"Mendoza displayed a lot of toughness and won rounds mostly in the first half of their bout, but he couldn't land the type of shot on Tszyu that enabled him to knock out then-unbeaten Sebastian Fundora in the seventh round of his previous fight."<\/p>\n

Matt Leiberman of Boxing News 24 added: "A lot of referees would have stopped the fight in the eleventh round when Mendoza was hurt because he was taking a pounding from Tszyu. This referee allowed Mendoza to stay out there, and it probably would have been stopped if a different referee was working the fight.<\/p>\n

\"'Where<\/p>\n

"154(lbs) is the perfect spot for Mendoza to be at because he's not big enough to campaign at 160 or 168. He just ran into a fighter with a better gas tank and superior power. If Mendoza could have fought every round like he did in the twelfth, he would have won."<\/p>\n

Boxing commentator Dan Canobbio said: "I think Jermell Charlo versus Tim Tszyu is the next fight for both guys.<\/p>\n

"For Charlo, it could help restore his reputation, help restore his career. For Tszyu, it's the marquee win he's been looking for. These two have been talking trash for weeks, years."<\/p>\n
