PARIS:<\/strong> Former Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has guided Argentina \ufeffinto the Rugby World Cup semi-finals with an upset 29-17 win over Wales in Marseille.<\/a><\/p>\n

Los Pumas trailed 10-0 at one stage\ufeff but produced an inspired second half and veteran playmaker Nicolas Sanchez clinched victory late with a 50m intercept try.<\/p>\n

Argentina – spanked 27-10 by 14 man England in their opening game – are the first team to qualify \ufefffor the semis in Paris.<\/p>\n

Cheika previously coached Australia to the 2015 final and the 2019 quarters.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Pretty happy, I suppose. These players are such good people, without getting too emotional," Cheika said.<\/p>\n

"They have worked really hard and I think that hard work showed at the end of the game today. They wanted to fight for it, they wanted to earn it. We were behind so it takes a bit of leg work. The whole 23 along with the 10 who didn't play put in a huge effort."<\/p>\n

Argentina will play the winner of Sunday's (6am AEDT) heavyweight fight between Ireland and New Zealand in Paris.<\/a><\/p>\n

Cheika was asked whether his team could go all the way.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I don't know if we'll go with the sweeping statements just yet. We will wait and see. We are just thrilled to be going to Paris, we haven't had a taste of it yet at this World Cup. We will look at tonight's game and I know we won't be favourites but we'll be giving it our best."<\/p>\n

The first half was an average spectacle with bizarre moments including a \ufeffreferee change and multiple wardrobe malfunctions.<\/p>\n

South African whistleblower \ufeffJaco Peyper went off injured and was replaced by England's Karl Dickson.<\/p>\n

Argentina came from behind twice to reach their third World Cup semi.<\/p>\n

The Pumas were down 17-12 going into the last quarter but regained the lead thanks to a freshened pack which overpowered Wales.<\/p>\n

Replacement prop Joel Sclavi barged over for their first try in the 68th minute and Emiliano Boffelli's extras made it 19-17.<\/p>\n

Matias Moroni then pulled off a try saving tackle on Louis Rees-Zammit with six minutes to go, and three minutes later Sanchez intercepted Wales replacement Sam Costelow to secure victory.<\/p>\n

"We started reasonably well and got to 10-0 but gave away a couple of penalties," Wales coach Warren Gatland said.<\/p>\n

"Argentina were tough and stayed in the fight and you have got to give them credit and congratulate them. They hung in there.<\/p>\n

"We probably weren't at our best but we were up against a good side who took their chances.<\/p>\n

"They defended well. I thought they were a bit out on their feet before halftime but a couple of penalties allowed them back into the game. That for me was a bit disappointing, those couple of soft penalties. But I am not going to take anything away from Argentina.<\/p>\n
