The Jill\ufeffaroos<\/a> have held on against the Ferns to run out 16-10 winners in the opening match of the women's Pacific Championships<\/a> in Townsville.<\/p>\n

In the teams' first meeting since \ufefflast year's Rugby League World Cup final, history repeated itself as Australia emerged victorious.<\/p>\n

The match was rocked by an incident in the second half which saw A\ufeffnnessa Biddle sent to the sin bin and placed on report for a dangerous tackle on Ali Brigginshaw in the 69th minute.<\/p>\n

With the Ferns trailing by a converted try, Biddle played no further part in the match as Brigginshaw was also forced from the\ufeff field for a HIA.<\/p>\n

"It's pretty rare to see Ali Brigginshaw on the deck," Allana Ferguson said on Nine.<\/p>\n

Originally, the Jillaroos legend described the tackle as "really good contact".<\/p>\n

"It's not a nice feeling, certainly would've got the wind taken out of her at the very least but that's footy. I don't think it was too unsafe," she later added on the contact to Brigginshaw. \ufeff\ufeff<\/p>\n

Speaking post-match, Brigginshaw confirmed she was OK following the hit.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffThat's footy," she said with a smile.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffBeing on the end of those tackles, I'm just glad I'm OK.<\/p>\n

"\ufeff[Following the contact] I just wanted to get up off the ground as quickly I could. Whenever there is a good tackle or anything like that I just try to get back up.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffThat's footy, there was no intent to hurt me out there. That's just a part of the game and there's no harsh feelings towards [Biddle] and we move on."<\/p>\n

On debut, two-time Karyn Murphy Medallist Tamika Upton bagged herself a first-half double which included the opening try just four minutes into the match.<\/p>\n

Upton pushed up in support of Ali Brigginshaw, who went into dummy half and ran, creating space for the star fullback to go over.<\/p>\n

The response from the Ferns came eight minutes later as another debutant, Biddle, scored.<\/p>\n

A pinpoint kick from\ufeff Raecene Mcgregor found Biddle in the corner, allowing her to simply fall over the Kangaroos' line.<\/p>\n

Coming straight off the bench, \ufeffCaitlan Johnston made an immediate impact to extend Australia's lead.<\/p>\n

With a \ufeffsubtle step at the line and some brute strength, Johnston forced her way over.<\/p>\n

Upton bagged her second after \ufeffsplitting the New Zealand defence close to the line as Australia took a 16-4 lead into half-time.<\/p>\n

The Ferns put up a \ufeffsecond-half scare as Mele Hufanga crashed over.<\/p>\n

The Dally M centre of the year beat three Jillaroos defenders before powering through with two hanging off of her to score a one-handed try and reduce the margin to a converted try.<\/p>\n

Keeley Davis looked to have scored, however the Bunker intervened and deemed that the hooker fell just short of the tryline when performing a dummy half scoot.<\/p>\n

The Ferns will next \ufeffhost Tonga at Eden Park on Saturday, October 21.<\/p>\n
