The pair are family friends from when their fathers sailed together for the Drummoyne Sailing Club.

But Price had a whole professional sailing career before Haseldine was in school.

Price started sailing at eight years of age when an older cousin was looking for a crew and she just happened to be the right age and size to sit in the front of a Manly junior sailboat.

"I hated it on the first day," Price tells Wide World of Sports with a smile.

"But as I started to understand it a bit more, what excited me was that every day was different, like the conditions were different, or you were racing against different competitors, or sailing a different boat altogether and with a different group of people.

"It started as sailing one afternoon a week, then one afternoon plus Sunday, then adding more nights. All of a sudden, I started seeing the efforts of the work that I was doing in the squads that I was joining around the country."

At age 16, Price began to consider sailing professionally. She soon joined the World Cup Women's Match Racing Tour and began travelling overseas to represent Australia.

The opportunity to race at an Olympic Games was first put on Price's radar when she joined the extended squad of the Australian women's match racing team, which served as a talent identification pathway in preparation for the 2012 Olympics.

"I was the youngest by several years but for me, my attitude was, 'Take it as it comes, the opportunity to sail against the best in the country doesn't come around that often, so just learn as much as you can and maybe in a few Olympics time it might be your turn'," Price says.

However, Price's dreams soon accelerated as she began to rise through the ranks before, at just 18, she was offered to move from a crewing position into a steering role.

This placed Price at the pointy end of Olympic selection, and before she knew it, she was named in the three-woman match racing team and bound for London.

With her crew of Lucinda Whitty and Nina Curtis, the team won silver in the Elliott six-metre match racing event after losing to Spain in the final.

Following the London Olympic campaign, Price changed from match racing to fleet racing in the 49er FX class ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympics.

"Unfortunately, because of a range of different reasons, I did not get selected for the Rio Olympics. Australia didn't end up sending anyone in that [nation quota] spot," Price says.

"After that, I kind of took some time away from the sport. I finished my uni degree and started coaching at some girls' schools in Sydney.

"Then, two years ago, so five years after I stopped sailing, I decided to jump back in and I'm now going for Paris 2024 to win a gold medal this time.

"[During those five years] I saw sailing for what it was but I didn't love it as much as I do now that I'm back doing it. So, I think I needed that time away to see what I wanted to do in the sport."

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, a budding and inquisitive Haseldine asked Price to mentor her as she locked her eyes on making an Olympic team.

"Evie [Haseldine] approached me in September 2021 to mentor her. She was just getting out of the youth classes and into the Olympic classes and asked if we could have a chat," Price says.

"It was a walking chat as it was at the end of the pandemic and she was asking some incredible questions around, 'What does it take? What do I need to do? How do I process things? What do I need to do?'.

"I was super excited to hear someone talking in that way again so I said, 'Look, I am happy to mentor you but I don't know what you're like as a sailor. I know what you're like as a person, I know you're dedicated and passionate, but I actually need to see you on the water'."

The pair arranged to go sailing together the following week and gelled instantly.

"I called Evie that afternoon and I just said, 'We need to do more of this. I want to get back into sailing and I think that we would be an incredible team. I want to do this'."

Not even a month later, they were sailing together every weekday and planning an Olympic campaign.

"I quit my job and Evie dropped some subjects at uni and we just thought, 'All right, it's now or never with this. We need to do some work'," Price says.

"That's when it really started for us."

As she rose through the sport, Price was always the youngest in every squad or tour. But this constant was flipped when she partnered up with Haseldine.

"She's 20 and I'm 31 so there is a big age difference," Price says.

"It's very different being the youngest, as I was at my first Olympics, to now being the oldest and the more experienced.

"It's a very different role for me but I'm loving it. You can get so caught up in the emotional side of the sport, especially at an Olympics, but now I've experienced it, I've got a different worldly perspective of stepping away from something that you love because you're not loving it anymore and then coming back to it again."

There is also this full-circle feeling for Price considering that the pair could both experience their first Olympic campaign at a similar age, just 12 years apart.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CeEseL-PGVN/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp

"Evie is only 20 so she is around the age that I was when I was going through London so I can see so many likenesses between us and our situations and I just want to help her as much as I can," Price says.

"When I changed from being a crew to a skipper it was about 18 months out from the Games, so it was a really short period for us to learn as much as possible, and it's kind of the same situation here because of the pandemic and Tokyo 2020 delay.

"By the time I got back on the water and we decided to partner up, it's a very similar campaign in that it's very intense.

"So, I feel like she's going through what I've gone through already and I can help guide her with that."

Since launching into international competitions in the last year and a half, the pair have seen significant improvement and success.

In a giant leap towards realising their Olympic dreams, they claimed the bronze medal in the 49er FX class at the 2023 Sailing World Championships in the Netherlands in August.

The third-place performance set the country's best-ever world championship result in the event and secured Australia a nation quota for Paris 2024.

https://www.instagram.com/reel/CwGTmnAIiWD/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp

"To put down that performance and come away with a bronze medal at the world championships was not something that we were aiming for in terms of our result," Price says.

"We were goal-driven and the result then came with that. We saw the benefits of our structures and systems, and working well together as a team."

Having hovered around the top 10 teams for most of this season, Price describes the sudden jump onto the podium as a "statement move".

"I don't think people were expecting us to be there, I don't think we even expected to be in those medal positions before the worlds," she says.

"We are very positive about our potential and putting that performance down and getting that result, it does [make a difference to how you are viewed]. People start looking around for you on the start line and are more aware of where you are on the course because you're fighting at the front.

"People are starting to ask who is going to be at the top of the podium [at next year's Olympics] and it might not be as clear as it once was.

"It does give us confidence knowing we can do it but now we need to be consistent in our performances."

Despite earning Australia's nation quota, the next step for Price and Haseldine on their journey to Paris is to ensure that they are selected as the two-person team to represent the country.

"We have achieved a statement performance for us as a team but that doesn't mean that we take our foot off the pedal," Price says.

"We know that we have to keep doing everything we can and putting down good performances to make sure that it is us [who is selected].

"We're going to keep pushing forward with each training session and keep targeting our goals, so that when it comes to overall selection we ensure that it's us, and then when we go to Marseille for the Olympic Games, that it's us standing in the middle of the podium."

At just 19 years of age, Olivia Price did something extraordinary.
