M\ufeffARSEILLE:<\/strong> Under siege and facing an uncertain future, Eddie Jones<\/a> has received support from an unlikely source.<\/p>\n

Jones and Michael Cheika<\/a> have traded some fierce verbal blows via the media over the years, but the former Randwick teammates also share enormous mutual respect.<\/p>\n

And so Cheika, the former Wallabies coach who has led Argentina \ufeffto the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals<\/a>, felt the need to reach out.<\/p>\n

"Definitely been in communication with different things, he'd (Jones) be hurting immensely," Cheika told Stan Sport's Tim Horan in an exclusive interview in Marseille.<\/p>\n

"And I think people don't see him like that but often us coaches are different people behind the visage of the media.<\/p>\n

"Like he said himself, he's taken some risks, they haven't paid off and that will be hurting him a lot. When you get criticised in the public domain a lot, it really hurts, you know. So I just checked in and said 'mate, you OK?' Because it's not easy when that's happening."<\/p>\n

Jones was aggressively booed and jeered during Australia's four pool games in France and is now facing a fierce backlash amid reports he is set to jump ship in France.<\/p>\n

Jones returned to Sydney on Thursday night and said he would hold a press conference on Monday.<\/p>\n

That has now been shifted to Tuesday.\ufeff<\/p>\n

\ufeffCheika coached Australia at two World Cups, reaching the final in 2015 and was knocked out by Jones' England in the 2019 quarters.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"The Wallabies will always be supported – it's a national team, you know," Cheika said.<\/p>\n

"I mean, I know it hurts right now but they're always going to be supported by people and in that emotional moment when you don't make it in this scenario – yeah, it does hurt, you know."<\/p>\n

So what does Cheika recommend for a turnaround?\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I'm not really into the strategy of… everyone's talking about how many (Super Rugby) teams and all this and all that.<\/p>\n

"When you get lots of good coaches together, they'll help lots of good players get better. They'll get fitter, they'll get better players and Australia has always had that about trying to work on our coaching system.<\/p>\n

\"Japan\u00a0vs\u00a0Argentina\u00a0RWC<\/p>\n

"That's going to help our players be better for the mental game and also for the game on the field as well. I know everyone's hurt about it but the Wallabies will definitely be back. There's no doubt about it, especially with the home World Cup (in 2027). Next time they'll be ready to go."<\/p>\n

Cheika is off contract with Argentina after the World Cup and there is potential for an unlikely Wallabies reunion should Jones move on.<\/p>\n

"He's a career coach, he's a proud Australian, I would absolutely think he would love to coach Australia again," former Wallabies backrower Stephen Hoiles said on Stan Sport's RWC 2023 Central<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"I would absolutely think he still harbours those ambitions. I don't think there was anything in that (interview to suggest something was afoot) but he's an Australian, this is where his family are from – it would make sense for him to want to be back at some stage.<\/p>\n

"He's a confident person and he backs his ability and is one of the very few coaches to get to three World Cup quarter-finals in a row.<\/p>\n

"And a nice touch to see that he's out there communicating with Eddie because when they Wallabies got knocked out in the (2019) quarter-finals, he was a very disappointed man, Michael Cheika, and he's been through it all to some degree."<\/p>\n
