Former Australian captain Michael Clarke<\/a> has teed off at selectors for dropping Alex Carey<\/a> and given a stinging assessment of Pat Cummins'<\/a> captaincy after a disastrous World Cup<\/a> thumping to South Africa.<\/p>\n

Australia won the toss and elected to bowl first, letting South Africa score more than 100 runs before the first wicket fell.<\/p>\n

The Proteas wound up 7-311 from their 50 overs. In reply, Australia were bundled out for 177 in 40.5 overs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The match highlighted some glaring failures in preparation and execution for the match.<\/p>\n

Carey's absence was among the question marks. Looking at his form of late, selectors could easily argue they had enough reason to not pick him.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the last 10 matches, Carey has scored more than his average of 32 just once.<\/p>\n

A top-score of 99 against South Africa is the sole standout in a streak that has otherwise seen him score a combined 87 runs from the other nine matches.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite that, Clarke took umbrage at the decision to drop the wicketkeeper with just one World Cup match under his belt.<\/p>\n

Josh Inglis was given the gloves instead, and dropped the first catching opportunity he had before going on to make five runs from four balls with the bat.<\/p>\n

Clarke suggested dropping Carey meant he bore the blame for Australia's loss to India in their first World Cup match.<\/p>\n

"I don't know what positives we can take out of that game," Clarke said on Big Sports Breakfast<\/em> of the loss to South Africa.<\/p>\n

"I don't think selections were right. I'm unsure how you can take Alex Carey to India in the World Cup squad, give him one game and then drop him.<\/p>\n

"No disrespect (to) Josh Inglis, I don't know him at all and I've heard from a lot of people that he's very talented and there's something about him, but unfortunately last night he didn't have a great night with the gloves.<\/p>\n

"He dropped some balls early. I've got to be careful how I say this because I don't know him and it's not just about him \u2014 I just think Alex Carey is a better 'keeper, and I think we saw that in the first 10 overs of the game.<\/p>\n

"I don't know how they drop Alex Carey after one game, like what's the point of taking him? And now what do you do? You reinstate him? You bring him back?<\/p>\n

"You can't look at the first game against India and go, 'OK, Alex Carey is the problem. Drop him'. That's the other thing I think that frustrated me when I saw that line-up.<\/p>\n

"I thought, hang on, you're pretty much blaming Alex Carey for our performance against India."<\/p>\n

\"Stoinis\u00a0departs\u00a0in\u00a0controversial\u00a0circumstances\"<\/p>\n

Clarke lamented captain Cummins' approach to the match too.<\/p>\n

The first mistake, he believes, was opting to bowl first. The second was not capitalising on that opportunity and taking a passive field set and bowing attack.<\/p>\n

Cummins' captaincy was also questioned during the Ashes earlier this year.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I fought harder than anyone for Pat Cummins to be Australian captain and I still stand here and say I think he's the right man for the job but tactically last night I think he got it wrong again," Clarke said.<\/p>\n

"He won the toss and bowled, I think he ball-chased and I don't think he was aggressive enough. I don't think he looked to take wickets.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I feel like I'm wasting my breath. The easiest way to slow scoring is to take wickets yet we continue in Twenty20 cricket and one-day cricket, try to prevent runs.<\/p>\n

"How is Pat Cummins not bowling in the first 10 overs? Or even if you're going Glenn Maxwell, like we did, you've got to have a slip to the left-hander? You've probably got to have a bat-pad to the right-hander, like you've got to look to take wickets early.<\/p>\n

"I love him and I'm more than happy for him to be captain but he's got to do some work on that."<\/p>\n

Across the board, Australia lacked in the field.<\/p>\n

Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa, Sean Abbott, Cummins, and Inglis all dropped catches.<\/p>\n

From their two matches to date, Australia have slumped to the bottom of the table for catches taken with a meagre 54 per cent success rate.<\/p>\n

Cummins said all his men knew how badly they played.<\/p>\n

"I think if we want to be challenging, you [have] got to try and find a way in all conditions, and that's for the bowlers try and take wickets and for the batters try and score runs," Cummins said post-match.<\/p>\n

"Probably not much needs to be said [to my teammates] tonight. I think everyone's hurting. We've got a few days and the next game's here as well. So we'll group and regroup… everyone's hurting. So we're trying to make amends."<\/p>\n
