When David Warner<\/a> caught Marco Jansen late in South Africa's innings<\/a>, his face said it all.<\/p>\n

The frustration was clear after he watched Mitchell Starc<\/a> and Marcus Stoinis drop catches, with the latter the easiest of the night.<\/p>\n

Before those two chances, Josh Inglis, Adam Zampa, Sean Abbott and Pat Cummins also blew quality opportunities to remove South Africa's batters.<\/p>\n

After Stoinis' horror effort, former Aussie star Shane Watson<\/a> summed it up as "disappointing".<\/p>\n

"I don't really have many words, disappointing," he said on commentary.<\/p>\n

"An important time for Australia, they just haven't been able to execute their skills."<\/p>\n

He added later: "Australia always pride themselves on their fielding standard, the ground fielding has been good today … unfortunately catching just hasn't been up to standard for what they need against a powerful South African batting order."<\/p>\n

For any cricketer, fielding is the basic fundamental behind the sport.<\/p>\n

The signs were there in the Ashes, with Starc claiming a catch that wasn't in the rules<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sean Abbott then did the exact same thing against India ahead of the World Cup<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\ufeffMitchell Marsh dropped Virat Kohli on 12 against India<\/a> before the superstar went on to score 85 and help his country to victory.<\/p>\n

Australia's display in the field against South Africa also included some uncharacteristic errors.<\/p>\n

Known as their best on the ground, Glenn Maxwell came up with a number of routine mistakes.<\/p>\n

\ufeffIn the fifth over, a simple cover drive from Temba Bavuma went straight through his hands, giving the South African skipper an easy single.<\/p>\n

Then, in the 48th over, with the little moments pivotal, David Miller smoked a drive to Maxwell at cover with the ball going through his legs for two runs.<\/p>\n

It was bizarre for one of Australia's best.<\/p>\n

Without being there, it's impossible to know the conditions of the field either, but as Watson said, Australia "pride themselves" on this area of the game.<\/p>\n

The look on Cummins' face after the misfield said it all. \ufeff<\/p>\n

\ufeffThings went from bad to worse the next ball when Starc dropped Miller at square leg.<\/p>\n

A tough but catchable chance. \ufeff<\/p>\n

Think it can't get any worse?<\/p>\n

Think again.<\/p>\n

Stoinis then dropped the easiest catch of the night, \ufeffwith Marco Jansen sending it high and getting a reprieve.<\/p>\n

It was a horror show, and not one Australian fans are used to.<\/p>\n

"Regardless of what the scoreboard is, you always want to be in the contest in the field," Aaron Finch said in commentary.<\/p>\n

\"Zampa\u00a0misjudges\u00a0airborne\u00a0catch\"<\/p>\n

"Yes dropped catches happen, you understand that but it's starting to become a habit. The fielding performance against India wasn't as polished as what it could be."\ufeff<\/p>\n

Now after two poor showings to start the tournament, there's pressure on fielding coach Andre Borovec and the whole group.<\/p>\n

With the opening games, Australia are now sitting at the bottom of the table for catch efficiency with 54 per cent. India are on top at 92 per cent.<\/p>\n

Can they pick up their act before it's too late at this World Cup?<\/p>\n
