MARSEILLE:<\/strong> Wallabies<\/a> coach Eddie Jones<\/a> will hold a press conference on Monday but says he is "committed to Australia" amid multiple reports he is poised to jump ship to Japan.<\/a><\/p>\n

Jones touched down in Sydney on Thursday night following a disastrous Rugby World Cup campaign<\/a> in which the Wallabies failed to qualify for the quarter-finals for the first time in the tournament's \ufeffrich 36-year history.<\/p>\n

The 63-year-old was greeted by a 7News reporter at the airport and was asked directly whether he was heading to Japan.\ufeff<\/p>\n

\"Eddie<\/p>\n

"No comment, mate," Jones replied.<\/p>\n

"I'll speak to the media on Monday. But I'm committed to Australia."<\/p>\n

Jones then claimed he'd had "no discussion" with Japanese officials despite the bombshell Sydney Morning Herald report that he had interviewed for the coaching role vacated by Jamie Joseph.\ufeff<\/a><\/p>\n

Japanese media have reported that Jones is the frontrunner to take over from Joseph.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Oh well, I can't control that mate," Jones said of the reports.<\/p>\n

Jones coached Japan from 2012-15 and engineered the incredible upset World Cup victory over South Africa in Brighton.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Jones is contracted until the home 2027 World Cup and Rugby Australia chief executive Phil Waugh told Wide World of Sports recently that he expected that deal to be honoured.<\/a><\/p>\n

\ufeffAn RA spokesperson told WWOS that there was no further update to Waugh's comments.<\/p>\n

"Everyone's seen the reports that he's supposedly – which is pretty real – that he had an interview with Japanese rugby and he obviously has coached there for a long period of time," Wallabies legend Tim Horan told WWOS radio.<\/a><\/p>\n

\"Question<\/p>\n

"And I get that's OK if you've got six months left in your contract.<\/p>\n

"But… he signed a $4.5 million, five-year agreement. So to do that virtually at the start of that contract is tough for players and fans to understand. So I think it'll come out in the next couple of days…<\/p>\n

"Time will tell whether he wants to commit to try and coach this young side."<\/p>\n

Horan was a star in both of Australia's World Cup titles and worked as a selector for Jones in his previous term as Wallabies coach.<\/p>\n

"The first time for the Wallabies to miss out on the quarter-finals in 10 Rugby World Cups – it's hurt a lot of people," Horan said from Marseille.<\/p>\n

"It's quite sad now that we're in the quarter-final weekend and there's not a lot of gold jerseys around. It's tough. Eddie Jones has to make a call whether he wants to commit to this team.<\/p>\n

"I was in the dressing shed a couple of weeks ago with the team and the players seem to like Eddie Jones, they like the direction that he's trying to take this team. But they've got to take a lot of responsibility as well."<\/p>\n

Horan argued RA should have stuck with predecessor Dave Rennie, who was sensationally axed in January when Jones became available after getting the same treatment from England.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I would have definitely had Dave Rennie stay, as Dave Rennie had said after this World Cup, he'd be leaving. So I would have said 'Eddie, if you want to come to the Wallabies, you can come in on the first of November because we've got Dave Rennie…'.<\/p>\n

"I thought he (Rennie) had that team humming and unfortunately Eddie just couldn't get that second rhythm. It's now up to Rugby Australia and the board who approved it as well.<\/p>\n

"Has Eddie Jones got the confidence of the players and the skill set to actually take this team forward? Because there's a fair bit of heat around at the moment, a lot of emotion, and you have to give fans some sort of hope that this team can do something."<\/p>\n

Horan said former Wallabies assistant Dan McKellar was the obvious successor if Jones does go.<\/p>\n

\"Dave<\/p>\n

"The best coach at the moment is Dan McKellar, who was with the Brumbies for about five or six years, but he's signed to Leicester over in the UK. He's only just started that agreement.<\/p>\n

"So you'd have to try and find a way to actually get him out of that agreement. He's the best coach, Dan McKellar, but time will tell.<\/p>\n
