Former Australian<\/a> captain Mark Taylor<\/a> has put the side's shocking fielding display down to a "mindset" issue after Josh Inglis, Adam Zampa, Sean Abbott, Pat Cummins<\/a>, Mitchell Starc and Marcus Stoinis<\/a> all blew opportunities against South Africa.<\/p>\n

Cummins' drop was probably the most costly, fumbling an Aiden Markram chance off his own bowling when the gun batsman was on one. Markram went on to score 56. \ufeff<\/p>\n

The terrible efforts in the field come after Mitchell Marsh dropped Virat Kohli on 12<\/a> in the side's opening World Cup match with the Indian star going on to score 85 and help his side to victory.<\/p>\n

Taylor believes the result of Australia's display in the field is down to mindset which has in turn created a "plague". \ufeff<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI just feel our mindset's not quite right, to be totally honest, I think we're thinking too defensively about this World Cup in the sub-continent," he said on Nine's coverage.<\/p>\n

"You'll see these catches, a lot of them are in the deep, catches you'd expect Australians to take.<\/p>\n

"That's a tough one from Inglis, that's a big deflection there, that hits him on the legs, you don't expect that to be taken but there's a few here you do expect to be taken.<\/p>\n

"Abbott in the deep, catches it well, flicks it up but can't find Mitchell Starc who's right there.<\/p>\n

"Pat Cummins, you expect that to be held even though it's tough and there's a couple here towards the end that you'd expect Australian fieldsmen to take every day of the week.<\/p>\n

"It becomes a plague because Australia aren't thinking aggressively enough, they're waiting for the game to come to them rather than grabbing the game. I always think in one-day cricket in particular, but particularly in the sub-continent, you've got to think about getting batsmen out. It's the best way to keep the runs down. The more you think about being defensive, saving boundaries, boundaries come.<\/p>\n

"And also your fielders aren't looking to take those great catches that change the game. At the moment I think the Australians are waiting for the game to come to them rather than grabbing the game."<\/p>\n

Former short-format captain Aaron Finch also described Australian as "passive". \ufeff<\/p>\n

"What I've noticed today from the Australians their body language has just been lacking slightly, almost like they're a little bit passive, they're just waiting for something to happen to give them an opportunity to get them into the game," he said on commentary. <\/p>\n

"With bat, with ball, but in the field as well. It wasn't their sharpest performance, sloppiness at times, which you don't associate with the Australian fielding group." <\/p>\n

Within Australia's team to face South Africa, Mitchell Marsh, David Warner\ufeff, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood were the seven to play in the Ashes.<\/p>\n

An argument has been made that the Aussie side looked tired but Taylor disputed that. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"It's been a big year but a lot of the players didn't play in the Ashes, particularly this side," he said.<\/p>\n
