C\ufeffhampion horse<\/a> trainer Gai Waterhouse<\/a> says $10.6 million mare Alcohol Free can win Saturday's The Everest<\/a>, but concedes the import may need a longer race.<\/p>\n

Alcohol Free \ufeffwas purchased by BBA Ireland's Michael Donohoe at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale 10 months ago, becoming the second most expensive horse ever sold at a European auction.<\/p>\n

She then became the most expensive horse ever brought Down Under when \ufeffDonohoe employed Waterhouse and her training partner Adrian Bott to prepare Alcohol Free for an Aussie onslaught.<\/p>\n

Her massive price was justified by a stellar career record under former trainer Andrew Balding\ufeff, who won six times in 15 starts including four Group 1 victories.<\/p>\n

Her biggest win was in the July Cup over 1207 metres. On Saturday at Royal Randwick the six-year-old mare \ufeffwill be asked to run an even 1200m against the best sprinters Australia has to offer.<\/p>\n

Alcohol Free has only had two races since arriving at Waterhouse and Bott's stables, running 10th at Randwick in April and then fourth in a field of eight at the same track a fortnight ago.<\/p>\n

\ufeffWhile Waterhouse wouldn't concede she's feeling pressure to get the chocolates for Donohoe, she believes Alcohol Free has the talent to claim Saturday's $20 million feature race.<\/p>\n

"Any horse you buy you want it to perform," Waterhouse – a longstanding Victoria Racing Club (VRC) ambassador – told Wide World of Sports on Thursday.<\/p>\n

"The most important thing with Alcohol Free is the expense was because she was an outstanding race mare, so she was one of the few horses in England who won a Group 1 at every year of her life, and she won from 1200m to a mile.<\/p>\n

"She was the creme de la creme of female horses racing in England, there wasn't a better horse, so that's why she was so expensive.<\/p>\n

"Will she be able to run the Australian 1200m, which is very fast and furious? I think she can.<\/p>\n

"I think she will be better suited when she gets over further, but she's very tough, very good, and I think having the run the other day has really taken that fresh edge off her and she'll be very effective."<\/p>\n

Bookmakers have little faith in Alcohol Free's chances in The Everest, with Sportsbet installing the European mare as a $51 outsider.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThey prefer the other Waterhouse-Bott chance – Hawaii Five Oh ($14) – which is owned by larger-than-life advertising mogul John Singleton and billionaire businessman Gerry Harvey.<\/p>\n

Waterhouse has done just about everything throughout a racing career that recently earned her Legend status in the Australian Racing Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n

But The Everest – as well as Melbourne's famed Cox Plate – has eluded her.<\/p>\n

"Like a girl with diamonds, trainers and owners can never have enough trophies," she said.<\/p>\n

"I would love to win The Everest on Saturday…\ufeff It's come from nowhere, to everywhere. It's got a real sex appeal.<\/p>\n

"I think both horses have got outstanding chances, and both are very different.<\/p>\n

"Hawaii Five Oh is younger, he's already been Group 1 placed in the Stradbroke – a similar type of race. He's a big, tough, 600kg-plus horse, he's got a scintillating turn of foot, and he's owned by the two luckiest blokes in Australia, John Singleton and Gerry Harvey.\ufeff"<\/p>\n
