Australian star Alex de Minaur<\/a> has admitted that he refused to watch last year's Australian Open<\/a> after being forced to withdraw through injury.<\/p>\n

De Minaur held high hopes for his home Grand Slam tournament in 2020 after his starring role in Australia's ATP Cup team, but was sidelined due to an abdominal injury<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Speaking after his impressive straight-sets (6-3 6-3 7-5) win over Pablo Cuevas, de Minaur admitted the pain of missing out last year was driving him to greater heights this time around.<\/p>\n

"That was a pretty horrible moment," he told Nine's Jim Courier after the win.<\/p>\n

"It wasn't ideal, I had to pull out of my home Slam. Safe to say that I was really looking forward to it, so I kind of had to switch off everything, social media, didn't watch the tournament and I've just got a bit more hunger. <\/p>\n

"I've got a bit more fuel to drive that energy and now to be back here, I'm just soaking it all in. Damn it feels good to be back here in Australia."<\/p>\n

The Australian 21st seed barely put a foot wrong in his three-set demolition job and came out of the gates firing early.<\/p>\n

Cuevas came unstuck thanks to a huge tally of unforced errors that allowed de Minaur to keep the pace high and put the veteran on the backfoot.<\/p>\n

The Aussie continued on the same pace in the second set, causing Courier to call the situation a "red alert" for Cuevas.<\/p>\n

"This is red alert here for Cuevas," US tennis great Jim Courier said in commentary.<\/p>\n

"Alex just isn't missing, he's playing aggressive but just a really tight package of a game tonight, really high level."<\/p>\n

Through to the third round, de Minaur will have to draw on all his experience against Italian veteran Fabio Fognini.<\/p>\n
