Former Melbourne<\/a> champion Garry Lyon<\/a> has admitted the Demons called upon him to play a "pivotal role" in keeping midfielder Clayton Oliver<\/a> at the club, despite rumours he was on the outer after a rocky season.<\/p>\n

Oliver was the subject of intense speculation last week, with reports he was poised to jump ship<\/a> despite not having started a seven-year, $7 million contract.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Melbourne rang me about the (Oliver) situation and then we had a good discussion about it," Lyon told AFL Trade Radio.<\/p>\n

"I did end up having a chat with Clayton. It's a very complicated process when you're on the inside.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"When you've got the best (player) … that is in the situation when clubs are coming for him … you work your way through it.<\/p>\n

"Club and player both had to come together and make some concessions, give some ground\ufeff."<\/p>\n

Lyon\ufeff praised the Demons for putting the "person first", with Oliver admittedly struggling with the club's expected standards.<\/p>\n

"At times you've got to weigh up … what's more important, the player or the person. Undeniably they put the person first in this whole situation and Clayton (and the club) has come together," he said.<\/p>\n

"There's standards that need to be set."<\/p>\n

Lyon admitted that when the club first contacted him for advice, he was "horrified" to hear about the possible trade of Oliver.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I was horrified at the prospect of it," Lyon said.<\/p>\n

"The Melbourne footy club in the end said 'you're our player, Clayton, you've got five years to go, you're ours and it's incumbent on us to get the best out of you \ufeffas a footballer and out of you as a person. Now they've got work to do and I think it's a positive result."<\/p>\n

As for what caused the disconnect between Oliver and the club he won a premiership with in 2021, Lyon believes navigating his long-term hamstring injury played a major part.<\/p>\n

"From his side of things, it's the fact that he's missed footy for\ufeff the first time (due to injury). As a player you think you can play and the club are looking out for your best interests," Lyon said.<\/p>\n

"From the other side of the coin it would be … about standards. The level of professionalism. If that had slipped, which it would appeared to have been the case from Clayton's point of view. Whether that's attention to detail … lifestyle."<\/p>\n

Lyon also lauded Melbourne for sticking fat with Oliver, when the "easiest" option was to trade him out.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"From a trade point of view … if you've got an issue with a player, one of the easiest things to do is trade them out and make it someone else's issue," Lyon said.<\/p>\n
