F\ufefformer Australian captain Aaron Finch<\/a> has called for more aggression from Australia's batters, saying they played into the hands of India's spinners in the World Cup<\/a> opener.<\/p>\n

While admitting that the conditions favoured the home side, Finch, who captained Australia at the last World Cup, \ufeffsaid the team's batters needed to come to the crease with a more aggressive attitude.<\/p>\n

"You can't allow (Ravindra) Jadeja, Kuldeep (Yadav) and (Ravichandran) Ashwin to bowl how they want to bowl on a surface like that," he said.<\/p>\n

"They're so accurate and so highly skilled \u2013 Jadeja has done it to Australia so many times now.<\/p>\n

"Part of it comes down to how India bowled spin, but we also need to look at the way that Australia batted. There was a clear plan among the group to be proactive, to try to limit dot balls and rotate strike against what they knew would be a world-class group of spinners.<\/p>\n

"There was a bit of a lack of aggression from the Australian batters. I think they'll be disappointed by the intent they showed and the fact that they weren't able to put any pressure back on India.<\/p>\n

"It needs a mindset shift, to look to be on the front foot a little more and take some calculated risks."<\/p>\n

Central to the aggression issue is the question of whether the team can afford to play both Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne in the same team.<\/p>\n

While both Smith and Labuschagne \ufeffare prolific Test players, they remain an awkward fit in Australia's ODI team, as evidenced by their innings of 46 off 71 deliveries and 27 off 41 deliveries against India, respectively.<\/p>\n

Smith in particular has struggled in the 50-over format this year, averaging just 30.50 in seven matches at a strike rate of 80.\ufeff97. Labuschange, on the other hand, comes into the World Cup on the back of a particularly strong ODI year, averaging 49.10 at a strike rate of 91.09 in 12 matches this year.<\/p>\n

Also in the firing line is all-rounder Cameron Green, who managed just eight off 20 deliveries against India.<\/p>\n

Green has scored just 97 runs in eight ODIs in 2023 at a paltry average of 16.16 and a strike rate of \ufeff66.43.<\/p>\n
