American golf<\/a> star Patrick \ufeffCantlay is being accused of staging a silent Ryder Cup<\/a> protest, but the man himself has denied the allegations.<\/p>\n

The \ufeff31-year-old was picked to represent Team USA at the intercontinental tournament last month.<\/p>\n

But he was the only athlete\ufeff who refused to wear a team hat during the four-day event at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club.<\/p>\n

Cantlay even mocked wearing a hat while celebrating after sinking a putt, tipping an imaginary cap when other players used their real ones.<\/p>\n

Sky Sports reporter \ufeffJamie Weir first aired allegations Cantlay was protesting the fact Ryder Cup players are not paid for the tournament.<\/p>\n

Cantlay responded to that report by saying it was "the furthest thing from the truth".<\/p>\n

"It's not about that. It's just about Team USA and representing our country," he told media in Rome.<\/p>\n

"That's all I've got to say about that."<\/p>\n

But new details have now been aired by respected long-time American golf journalist and author \ufeffMichael Bamberger.<\/p>\n

Bamberger this week revealed sources \ufeffclaim Cantlay was asked why he wasn't wearing a hat when players stood on the first tee on the opening day of the tournament.<\/p>\n

It's alleged the American responded, "I'll wear a hat when I'm paid to be here like he is", and pointed to the PGA of America's chief media executive Julius Mason.<\/p>\n

\ufeffRyder Cup players from both Team USA and Team Europe are not paid, as selection is considered more of an honour than a financial incentive.<\/p>\n

Team USA players are instead given about $311,000 to donate to charities of their choice.<\/p>\n

There is also no mandate for players to wear a team hat, and no sponsor requirements like most would have during other professional events.<\/p>\n

\ufeffA number of professionals have protested the no-pay stance in the past – Tiger Woods, Mark O'Meara, and David Duval famously spoke up in 1999, leading to the USA's decision on charity donations.<\/p>\n

Cantlay was roped into another bizarre Ryder Cup controversy last month.<\/p>\n

His caddie Joe LaCava mocked Team Europe superstar Rory McIlroy on the 18th green<\/a> on day three, leading to the latter's furious confrontation with another American caddie in the carpark after play.\ufeff<\/p>\n
