M\ufeffARSEILLE:<\/strong> Former Wallabies<\/a> backrower Stephen Hoiles has urged Eddie Jones to make a swift decision on his coaching future<\/a> while calling for Phil Waugh to take a more hands-on role in rugby matters.<\/p>\n

Australia's Rugby World Cup<\/a> was ended in agonising fashion \ufeffon Monday (AEDT) as Fiji picked up the solitary bonus point against Portugal that they required to knock the Wallabies out.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Wallabies understandably took little time to then activate their holiday plans and Lyon Part Dieu train station was busy with squad members heading to the south of France to lick their wounds.<\/p>\n

Jones has signalled that Australia's performance will be scrutinised \ufeffduring a November review and has put his hand up to be "the fall guy" should his bosses decide a head must roll.<\/p>\n

He is contracted to Rugby Australia until the home 2027 World Cup.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI think the fans of the Wallabies, the supporters, I think we're all just wanting to find out is this going to be our coaching structure going through?" Hoiles said on Stan Sport's RWC 2023 Central<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"Is Eddie Jones committed to coaching this side through the Lions series (in 2025) and through to the next World Cup? One of the images I saw last week was Phil Waugh sitting at Wallaby training.<\/p>\n

"And now if we're talking about doing an in depth review, an independent review, those words, they're fancy words. We don't need to go into great depth. You go and talk to the right people.<\/p>\n

"Phil Waugh, while he's new in the role of CEO, he's an expert in high performance in rugby because he's lived there for so long.<\/p>\n

"A long part of his life. He's been a captain of the Wallabies. He's been a captain of the state. He could sit at a week's worth of Wallaby training sessions and he could probably tell you what's wrong with them. So I think he needs to have more of an involvement in the rugby side of things."<\/p>\n

Hoiles, who coached Randwick to a drought-breaking Shute\ufeff Shield title this year, said there was no point doing an in-depth analysis of what went wrong until the Jones matter was resolved.<\/p>\n

Jones reportedly interviewed for the now vacant Japan \ufeffjob shortly before the World Cup kicked off.<\/p>\n

"There's no point doing a review if the coaching system changes and then that new person comes in and does it all his own way anyway.<\/p>\n

"So I think step one is to find out who is going to be our coach. Is it Eddie Jones? Does he want to coach the Wallabies?<\/p>\n

"And if so, then it's about working out OK, what went wrong this year with Eddie Jones? And what do we need to do to improve this Wallaby team going forward?"<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
