A\ufeffmerican boxing star Brian Mendoza says he is prepared to hurt Tim Tszyu<\/a> "for 12 rounds", but has stopped short of what he deems to be "corny" trash talk ahead of the fight.<\/p>\n

Mendoza (22-2, 16 KOs), will take on Tszyu (23-0, 17 KOs) on the Gold Coast this Sunday for the WBO<\/a> super welterweight title\ufeff, and said he is prepared to go the distance if necessary despite declaring that he has more power than the Aussie star.<\/p>\n

"I have more one-punch knockouts … once he gets you he's a finisher and everything, but I think based off the facts, I have more explosive shots," he said.<\/p>\n

"The thing about me is I have power but I'm not just a power puncher. I don't go in there looking for one shot, I'll hurt you for 12 rounds.<\/p>\n

"I do look for the knockout, I do want to put on a big show, I think that's why I got called here to this beautiful country in the first place, but I'm in there to put punishment on you for 12 rounds. <\/p>\n

"Yeah, I have one-shot knockouts here and there, but you've seen my last few fights … I carry the power late and I'm totally fine however long the fight needs to go for me to get that victory, that's what I've got to do."<\/p>\n

The 29-year-old \ufeffsaid he sees "a lot of similarities" between Tszyu and his legendary father Kostya, revealing he and his own father used to attend fight parties to watch the Aussie icon in the ring.<\/p>\n

He refused to buy into the customary brash trash talking that takes place between boxers in the lead-up to a fight, but won't take any prisoners come Sunday.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I've always said I want my performances to speak for me," he said.<\/p>\n

"I'm not a trash talker and I feel like the people that flip the switch a little too early and force it, it comes off corny.<\/p>\n

"I think the reason I've been resonating with people is because I'm real. I'm myself, this is who you're going to see on and off the camera, but on fight night I'm definitely a killer and I'm in there to hurt my opponent, there's no friendliness in there."<\/p>\n

Unlike the undefeated Tszyu, Mendoza carries two losses into Sunday's bout, after being beaten by Larry Gomez and Jesus Alejandro Ramos Jr in 2021, but said the losses had made him stronger.<\/p>\n

"I want to take out everybody in my division as well," he said.<\/p>\n

"It's part of the game and that's why I say once we go in there, that switch flips and it's a war. <\/p>\n

"We're aiming for the same goal and only one can come out on top. There's no second place in boxing. <\/p>\n
