K\ufeffenyan rising star Kelvin Kiptum has produced a staggering run in the Chicago Marathon, clocking two hours and 35 seconds (2:00:35) to shatter the men's world record held by the legendary Eliud Kipchoge<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Not since 2018 had someone other than Kenya's Kipchoge held the world record, but Kiptum \u2014 a 23-year-old who was contesting just his third marathon \u2014 now owns the mark after pulling off an astounding winning run on Monday morning (AEDT).<\/p>\n

Kipchoge had been the world-record holder since September 2018, and at last year's Berlin Marathon the two-time Olympic gold medallist lowered the mark to 2:01:09<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Kiptum loomed as a significant chance\ufeff of breaking the world record as he zeroed in on the Chicago Marathon, having gone within 44 seconds of the mark in December last year and within 16 seconds of the mark in April this year.<\/p>\n

There is now more anticipation than ever surrounding the prospect of the first official sub-two-hour marathon being run.<\/p>\n

In October 2019, Kipchoge became the first person in history to run a marathon in less than two hours when he clocked 1:59:40 in Vienna.<\/p>\n

However, it did not count as an official world record because of a variety of factors, including a rotating cast of pacemakers and laser lights beaming from a car in front.<\/p>\n

"I'm just so happy," Kiptum said moments after blitzing the Chicago Marathon.<\/p>\n

"I wasn't prepared. I knew I was coming for the course record, but fortunately [I broke] the world record.<\/p>\n

"I am very happy.<\/p>\n

"A world record was not in my mind today … but I knew one day I would be a world-record holder."\ufeff<\/p>\n

Until Monday morning, the Berlin Marathon had been the scene of the last eight men's marathon world-record runs, and not since 2002 had the men's world record been broken away from the Berlin Marathon.<\/p>\n

In Monday\ufeff morning's Chicago Marathon, Kiptum posted 60:48 for the first half and 59:47 for the second.<\/p>\n

He finished four minutes and 27 seconds ahead of Kenya's Benson Kipruto (2:04:02), with Belgium's Bashir Abdi (2:04:32) rounding out the podium.\ufeff<\/p>\n

In the women's race, \ufeffSifan Hassan of the Netherlands took victory and registered the second-fastest time by a woman in history, stopping the clock at 2:13:44.<\/p>\n

In another emphatic reminder of her remarkable range, she did so just six weeks after winning a bronze medal over 1500 metres at the world athletics championships in Budapest.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Kenya's Ruth Chepngetich finished second in 2:15:37 and Ethiopia's\ufeff Megertu Alemu came home third in 2:17:09.<\/p>\n

Switzerland's Marcel Hug stormed to victory in the men's wheelchair race in the time of 1:22:37, finishing eight minutes and 57 seconds ahead of the USA's Daniel Romanchuk, who finished second in 1:31:34. Jetze Plat of the Netherlands finished third in 1:31:40.<\/p>\n

In the women's wheelchair race,\ufeff Switzerland's Catherine Debrunner won in 1:38:44, the USA's Susannah Scaroni finished second in 1:38:46 and America's Tatyana McFadden came home third in 1:41:17.<\/p>\n

As Kiptum charged to victory over the remaining 100 metres of the Chicago Marathon, the young gun gestured to cheering fans\ufeff, flung out his arms and pumped his fists.<\/p>\n

"He's going to crush the world-record time," shouted the master of ceremonies.<\/p>\n

Kenyan running legend Paul Tergat, a former marathon world-record holder, hailed Kiptum on social media.<\/p>\n

"The beauty of world records is that they are set to be broken," Tergat wrote.<\/p>\n

"Phenomenal Kelvin Kiptum has done it in style and pose. 2:00:35 is breathtaking.<\/p>\n

"The bravery we want to continue seeing.<\/p>\n

"Marathon world record just got elevated."<\/p>\n

Steve Magness, a world-renowned performance coach, described Kiptum's run on social media as "absolutely insane".<\/p>\n

"A truly epic performance from the greatest talent in the history of the marathon," wrote Citius Mag, an American athletics publication.<\/p>\n

Unlike Kipchoge, Haile Gebrselassie, Kenenisa Bekele and Mo Farah\ufeff, Kiptum hasn't taken to marathon running on the back of a spectacular track career.<\/p>\n

He announced himself to the athletics world when he clocked 2:01:53 in the Valencia Marathon in December last year, before posting 2:01:25 at the London Marathon in April.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The thought of Kiptum taking on Kipchoge at Paris 2024 is mouthwatering.\ufeff<\/p>\n
