In a remarkable dose of bad luck, lightning struck twice for one team at the Bathurst 1000<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Two of the three Triple Eight Race Engineering-run cars suffered identical mechanical failures in the 161-lap epic at Mount Panorama.<\/p>\n

Seven-time Bathurst 1000 winner Craig Lowndes<\/a> was bundled out of contention on lap 17 when the gear stick mount failed, forcing him to the pit lane for repairs.<\/p>\n

Despite this year's Great Race being the longest out of the year, attrition didn't play much of a part.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, Triple Eight found itself on the receiving end of what little issues there were.<\/p>\n

As the final stint approached, Broc Feeney suffered the same fate exiting Forrest's Elbow.<\/p>\n

The pilot of the No.88 screamed in frustration as he struggled to get the car to change gear to no avail.<\/p>\n

Feeney returned to the pit lane where he curled up into his race seat, wiping tears from his eyes while his team tried to remedy the issue.<\/p>\n

"I'm gutted," said Feeney.<\/p>\n

"We were real fast. The track was coming to us. I don't know what the fuel numbers were like but we were real fast out there.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"This place can be the best but it can also be the worst. I'm absolutely gutted, mate."<\/p>\n

His co-driver, seven-time Supercars champion Jamie Whincup, knows all too well what it's like to have the race ripping from his grasp.<\/p>\n

"It's such a hard race to win and such an easy one to lose," said the four-time Bathurst 1000 winner.<\/p>\n

"One small issue and your day is done. Seems like a similar thing to what 888 had with the tower for the gear stick has come unstuck and he can't get any gears in there. Disappointing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Broc did a fantastic job. Both cars were well and truly there. That's why we have two cars though, so you've got an each-way bet. Fingers crossed 97 can do the job.<\/p>\n

"Today's not the day," Whincup added.<\/p>\n

"He'll have his day. He's got plenty of years left in him. We've still got another car out there.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It's looking good on fuel and tyres with one more stop to go. We'll put all our eggs in one basket."<\/p>\n

While the No.888 and No.88 cars found themselves in strife, the No.97 largely escaped any major problems.<\/p>\n

A brake issue threatened to derail Shane van Gisbergen in the final stint before encountering a steering rack dead spot.\u00a0<\/p>\n
