Mark Taylor<\/a> has\ufeff applauded the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) after it expelled one member and suspended two others<\/a> following their abuse of Australian players at Lord's in July.<\/p>\n

The MCC's investigation, which wrapped up on Thursday, resulted in one member being banned for life, one suspended for four-and-a-half years and the other suspended for 30 months.<\/p>\n

As Australian players made their way through the Lord's Long Room at lunch during the second Ashes<\/a> Test, insults were hurled and some were allegedly tripped.<\/p>\n

\ufeffUsman Khawaja and David Warner took exception, stopping and arguing.<\/p>\n

The feral scenes erupted after Alex Carey stumped Jonny Bairstow as the Englishman wandered out of his crease<\/a>, with MCC members and England fans believing the Australians had disrespected the spirit of cricket.<\/p>\n

"Harsh, no doubt about it, but fair, in my opinion. I think you've got to make penalties tough," Taylor said on Nine's Sports Sunday<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"I think that walk through the Lord's Long Room is iconic in sport, and I'd love to see it stay, but you can't\ufeff have those scenes like we had at Lord's.<\/p>\n

\"Usman<\/p>\n

"The players were obviously quite upset about it, and rightfully so.<\/p>\n

"The only way to stop that out is to say, 'Righto, we're not having that'.<\/p>\n

"So I think well done to the … MCC, who run Lord's.<\/p>\n

"Make the penalties tough, then you stamp it out."<\/p>\n

Australian players were labelled "cheats", "liars" and a "disgrace", and were told to go back to Australia.\ufeff<\/p>\n

The MCC did not disclose the identities of the three expelled or suspended members.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"When I played many years ago you walked right through the members," Taylor added.<\/p>\n

"There was no walkway. You had to sort of way, 'Excuse me, sir', and they'd blow their cigar smoke in\ufeff your face.<\/p>\n

"They've now got a walkway, so they've done that which is good for the players, but they want to keep that iconic event. So, behave yourself; [that's] the bottom line."<\/p>\n

Australia won the Lord's Test to go 2-0 up in the series, but England fought back to ensure the series ended in a 2-2 draw.\ufeff<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
