Supercars<\/a> championship leader Brodie Kostecki has continued his sensational form in the lead up to the Bathurst 1000<\/a>, claiming provisional pole in a carnage-filled qualifying session.<\/p>\n

Kostecki logged a time of 2:04.664 to sit more than a tenth of a second clear of James Golding, who was undoubtedly the surprise package of the session.<\/p>\n

Anton de Pasquale was third, three tenths behind Kostecki.<\/p>\n

The top ten was made up by Cam Waters, Broc Feeney, David Reynolds, Shane van Gisbergen<\/a>, Matt Payne, Chaz Mostert and Will Davison.<\/p>\n

The first twist in the session came just as the drivers were commencing their first flying laps when Will Brown \u2013 who had been among the favourites for provisional pole \u2013 buried his Erebus Camaro in the tyre wall at Griffins Bend.<\/p>\n

Luckily, he was able to drive it back to the pits and somehow avoided damaging the steering.<\/p>\n

Only moments after the red flags were lifted from that crash, they were in the air again after Declan Fraser suffered his own monster crash at Reid Park.<\/p>\n

On the broadcast, Supercars legend Mark Skaife theorised Fraser was marginally wide on turn-in and it was enough for him to become a passenger into the concrete wall on driver's left.<\/p>\n

Such was the impact, the car was lifted right up on two wheels. Skaife said the crash might be enough to rub them out of the race.<\/p>\n

"That might be a throwaway," he said.<\/p>\n

But the second red flag for the Fraser crash was good news for Will Brown and Erebus, who continued to frantically repair Brown's car.<\/p>\n

Resplendent in several kilograms of race tape, Brown returned to the track a short time later.<\/p>\n

By the time the green flags flew, the session had been going for nearly 20 minutes and no driver had been able to set a time.<\/p>\n

When they finally did set times, Waters became the first driver to break the 2:05 barrier in a Gen3 Supercar around the Mount Panorama circuit, but was shortly after toppled by Kostecki.<\/p>\n

The final runs began with about three and a half minutes left on the clock.<\/p>\n

Some drivers, including Brown and van Gisbergen who were both outside the top 10, abandoned those laps to run a second.<\/p>\n

Only Mostert, who was running slightly behind the main pack, marginally improved, but a moment at McPhillamy Park might have cost him time.<\/p>\n

Running the second lap proved a masterstroke from van Gisbergen, who was able to improve and lift himself into the top 10.<\/p>\n
