Eddie McGuire<\/a> has defended Collingwood<\/a>'s booing of John Denver's 'Country Roads' that was sung when Brisbane<\/a> goal sneak Charlie Cameron<\/a> kicked goals during the grand final.<\/p>\n

But Jimmy Bartel hit back \ufeffat the antics, saying that song, amongst others, which has been played at the Gabba whenever Lions players boot a major, isn't meant to be an unfair advantage.<\/p>\n

The Magpies overcame Brisbane by four points to collect their 16th premiership<\/a>\ufeff in an instant classic at the MCG.<\/p>\n

Despite the gusty game, Bartel called out McGuire and Collingwood fans\ufeff booing at the start of the second quarter, after Cameron booted his first goal of the match and 'Country Roads' rang out at the ground for the second time.<\/p>\n

The MCG also played 'Country Roads' during the quarter time break.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Why do you have to boo it?" Bartel asked on Nine's Eddie and Jimmy podcast<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

McGuire, who was in the stands on the day, hit back at the question.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"You must've been sitting near me then," McGuire said.<\/p>\n

"Everyone sang along and then, there's a big section near me, yeah, there were people booing."<\/p>\n

Bartel asked McGuire again.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Why are you booing it?"<\/p>\n

McGuire this time mounted a strong defence.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"Are you kidding?" McGuire asked.<\/p>\n

"'Country Road' would be the equivalent of playing 'Good old Collingwood forever' (Collingwood's team song)."<\/p>\n

Cameron booted a goal just 30 seconds into the second term, with the song ringing through the stands.<\/p>\n

McGuire believes the singing was a tactic that boosted the Lions unfairly, giving them an advantage that the Pies didn't have.<\/p>\n

"You saw what happened," McGuire said.<\/p>\n

"We're on top, they're flat.<\/p>\n

\"MELBOURNE,<\/p>\n

"Mate, they bounce the ball, who's the song for? Who's the song for?"<\/p>\n

"We associate it with Charlie," Bartel said.<\/p>\n

But McGuire \ufeffstood firm that the song helped the Lions stay in the game.<\/p>\n

"And what happened 29 seconds into the, 15 seconds into the second quarter? He kicks the goal," McGuire said.<\/p>\n

"Mate, of all the songs, in the entire songbook of the world, don't play that one!"<\/p>\n

Bartel shut down \ufeffMcGuire's suggestions.<\/p>\n

"I love how you think that that actually played," Bartel said.<\/p>\n

But McGuire \ufeffexpressed his concerns over the advantage that Brisbane received, fearful that it could have helped the Lions win on the biggest stage.<\/p>\n

"Didn't matter, it happened in front of me. Right in front of me. As soon as it happened, I said 'you watch what's going to happen here'," McGuire said.<\/p>\n

"They're all lifting up, they're all going, Charlie Cameron's strutting back."<\/p>\n

Despite Cameron kicking his third goal to put the Lions in front \ufefflate in the final quarter, the Magpies managed to kick two of the last three goals to take home the premiership cup.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
