The AFL<\/a> world has reacted with shock at Western Bulldogs<\/a> handing key forward Aaron Naughton a new eight-year deal.<\/p>\n

\ufeffHaving already been contracted to the club for next season, the extension ties Naughton to Whitten Oval until the end of 2033.<\/p>\n

While his talent is obvious and he's only 23 years old, several former players have criticised the length of the deal.<\/p>\n

A number of long-term contracts have blown up in the face of clubs – most recently Brodie Grundy's at Collingwood, while Melbourne's Clayton Oliver appears on the brink of walking out on a seven-year, $7 million extension before it begins.<\/p>\n

At the Bulldogs presentation night on Wednesday, club CEO Ameet Bains claimed a rival club had offered Naughton a 10-year deal. The Swans and Eagles were rumoured to be interested in him.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, former Port Adelaide star Kane Cornes is not a fan of long-term contracts.<\/p>\n

"It is a huge price to pay and you are committing a huge amount of your salary cap to one player," Cornes said on AFL Trade Radio.<\/p>\n

"He is a good player, but he isn't a great player. He is not Buddy Franklin or Dustin Martin, they are the guys I would give these long deals to.<\/p>\n

"Is (Naughton) a top-10 key forward right now?"<\/p>\n

Cornes also tweeted "this will not end well".\ufeff<\/p>\n

Cornes then rattled off \ufeff13 names he believes are, or could be, in front of Naughton in the pecking order based on this season.<\/p>\n

One-time Brownlow Medal winner Adam Cooney agreed Naughton's form does not warrant a new eight-year deal.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"There's less than 10 players in the competition that I would give an eight-year contract to," Cooney said.<\/p>\n

"I wouldn't give an eight-year deal to any player that's over 22."\ufeff<\/p>\n
