Greg Murphy's top-10 shootout lap for the 2003 Bathurst 1000<\/a> is widely regarded as one of the best laps in Supercars<\/a> history.<\/p>\n

Murphy, John Bowe and Mark Skaife<\/a> became the first three drivers to ever break the 2:08 barrier at Mount Panorama in qualifying the day before.<\/p>\n

The last car in the shootout in perfect conditions on that Saturday afternoon, Murphy would stun the Supercars world when he put more than a second between him and John Bowe to clock a 2.06.85.<\/p>\n

This year marks 20 years since that moment, which in itself came 20 years after Dick Johnson's legendary crash in the 1983 Hardies Heroes<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It became known as the Lap of the Gods, and would remain the quickest lap by a Supercar until Craig Lowndes went quicker during practice for the 2010 event.<\/p>\n

But this tale was almost very different.<\/p>\n

Coming out of the Dipper, Murphy made an error on the upshift from second to third gear that could have not only ruined the lap, but destroyed what was clearly an incredibly powerful engine.<\/p>\n

Instead of sliding neatly into third gear, the shifter went back into first and the engine viciously revved.<\/p>\n

The error is virtually undetectable on the broadcast \u2013 legendary commentator Neil Crompton even quipped Murphy's lap was mistake-free at the exact moment he was making one.<\/p>\n

"It was a moment like, 'Oh, you f–king idiot, you've ruined it', you know," Murphy told Wide World of Sports ahead of the 20th anniversary of the legendary lap.<\/p>\n

"It caught my attention, and so I suppose I was more committed after that. I was so pissed off and I knew I'd cost myself time so maybe I tried even harder. I don't know.<\/p>\n

"I just knew I had to make the rest of the lap perfect to hopefully still get away with it."<\/p>\n

And get away with it he did. After the lap, Murphy drove the wrong way up pit lane as mechanics and team members from just about every other team came out and applauded the lap.<\/p>\n

But Murphy said behind the scenes, rumours were circulating around the paddock Murphy's KMart Racing Team had brought a special engine for qualifying, which would be switched out for the race.<\/p>\n

"Which was pretty humorous considering some of the people it was coming from, but that was our race engine," Murphy said.<\/p>\n

But there was still some concern about just how much damage had been done by that mistake. Supercar engines were limited to 7,500rpm, but the error saw it rev well beyond 9,000.<\/p>\n

"I know our engine builder went through the valve springs that night \u2026 everything was checked and the tappets were done and there were no bent valves.<\/p>\n

"I think they changed the valve springs, and she went on to power us through to a 1000 win the following day."<\/p>\n

Driving with Rick Kelly, the pair would return in 2004 and go back-to-back. He would retire from full-time driving after a battle with a recurring back injury at the end of the 2012 season.<\/p>\n

Murphy said he watched Bathurst from New Zealand every year as a kid, and was honoured to have become a part of "the folklore and history of the Great Race".<\/p>\n

"Just participating in that race was an honour every single time I did it," he said.<\/p>\n

"And to have contributed to the memories of it, the history of it \u2026 a lot of drivers never get the chance to experience something like that, or never get a chance to stand on the podium, or win the Great Race."<\/p>\n
