L\ufeffatrell Mitchell<\/a> has hit back at any suggestion he snubbed the Kangaroos<\/a> after coach Mal Meninga conceded he was "surprised" to see the superstar play at the Koori Knockout<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mitchell suited up for the Newcastle Yowies to make a cameo at the annual Indigenous football carnival, which was held on the NSW Central Coast over the long weekend.<\/p>\n

The event acts as a pilgrimage of sorts for Aboriginal rugby league players from around the country, and attracts some of the biggest names in the NRL<\/a>, who can either play or simply watch from the sidelines.<\/p>\n

But Mitchell's appearance came about a month after he made himself unavailable for both the Prime Minister's XIII and the Pacific Championships for Australia, citing a finger injury that needed time to heal.<\/p>\n

Asked about Mitchell at Tuesday's Kangaroos team reveal, Meninga told media he was "surprised"\ufeff, and later spoke to 9News about South Sydney's decision to let the fullback take the field.<\/p>\n

"A little bit disappointed that the South Sydney club gave him permission to play, when they didn't give him permission to play for the Aussies," Meninga said.<\/p>\n

Meninga, though, was careful not to criticise Mitchell directly, conceding the Rabbitohs star should take time away from the spotlight after a rollercoaster season.<\/p>\n

"Knowing Latrell, he loves the Koori Knockout, he always gets involved… a very proud First Nations person," Meninga said at the press conference.<\/p>\n

"He's got through that tournament well and (I) look forward to him having a good off-season and playing well next year."\ufeff<\/p>\n

After the news came to light, Mitchell took to Instagram \ufeffto clarify his position.<\/p>\n

"I play for my country because I love it," he wrote.<\/p>\n

"It's not my time to put the jersey on this year. It's for someone that deserves the crack… (Bradman Best) or (Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow). I will be back.<\/p>\n

"Koori Knockout was to simply give back to so many that deserve it.<\/p>\n

"I love my culture and my people. Don't get it twisted."\ufeff<\/p>\n
