SAINT-ETIENNE:\ufeff<\/strong> The train station was an apt backdrop as Australian rugby followers continue to wonder whether Eddie Jones is coming or going.<\/p>\n

The divisive Wallabies coach refused to discuss his future beyond this week after Australia got a Rugby World Cup stay of executing by beating Portugal on Monday (AEDT).<\/a><\/p>\n

And so Jones was naturally a hot topic when Rugby Australia \ufeffchief executive Phil Waugh met with reporters at his Saint-Etienne hotel the following morning.<\/p>\n

Before the tournament, Waugh had set making the semi-finals \ufeffas a pass mark for the Wallabies.<\/p>\n

Barring a Portugal provided minor miracle, Jones' team will instead suffer the indignity \ufeffof becoming the first Australian side to not make it out of pool play in 10 World Cups.<\/p>\n

"I think it's been bitterly disappointing," the former Test captain said.<\/p>\n

"We came here with a lot of hope and optimism and we sit here now, everything is out of our hands and we've got to pray that Portugal get up against Fiji next week. But I think very disappointed with the journey to where we are today and we've got a lot of work to do."<\/p>\n

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Jones interviewed to be Japan coach before the World Cup.<\/p>\n

Waugh reiterated that \ufeffhe expects Jones to see out his contract with RA until 2027 – despite the World Cup flop.<\/p>\n

"I take Eddie for his word, and he's told us that there is nothing to it," he said of the Japan interview.<\/p>\n

"We're committed to Eddie in the commitment that we made to him earlier in the year… pretty forthright around the fact that we're committed to Eddie and he probably looks at the campaign and is bitterly disappointed about his performance and the Wallabies performance. And so it's a pretty challenging world being a coach and I can understand some of his comments.<\/p>\n

"Eddie's made his comments to me that he's committed and there's nothing there. So I just say I've taken him for his word. I'm not going to go around speculating or trying to find out where conversations are occurring. He's committed that to us.<\/p>\n

"So we just need to work through the assessment of the campaign and look, there's no one more disappointed around our performance than myself and anyone else around the team."<\/p>\n

Waugh\ufeff – who played for the Wallabies under Jones – was asked whether the World Cup review could potentially result in him firing his former coach.<\/p>\n

Before the Portugal game, Jones \ufeffsaid he was prepared to be "the fall guy" for Australia's dismal campaign.<\/a><\/p>\n

\"Rugby<\/p>\n

"No, I think it's too early to say that," Waugh said.<\/p>\n

"We'll do the assessment of the campaign but our intent is to continue on the path that we're on.<\/p>\n

"I think this is not so much around chopping and changing coaches as it is around actually just fixing the system. I think it's pretty evident when we lose a couple of players, the depth of the player that we're bringing through is not necessarily up to it.<\/p>\n

"And you're not going to win World Cups or win international games if you don't have that depth and system supporting the national team."<\/p>\n

Waugh was referring to the devastating loss of captain Will Skelton and key prop Taniela Tupou to training injuries before the Fiji game.\ufeff<\/p>\n

That has a massive impact on that game, and 22-15, it's small margins again and Fiji played well, we played poorly," Waugh said.<\/p>\n

\"Eddie<\/p>\n

"And then you're out of the World Cup unless there's a miracle this weekend… selections is always one which is debatable and hindsight is a wonderful thing. Right now, we are praying for a Portugal win.<\/p>\n

"The performances weren't at a level that they need to be when you come to a World Cup… the depth is certainly a concern."<\/p>\n

Waugh also admitted that the gripping NRL and AFL grand finals at the weekend only highlighted rugby's struggles in the Australian market.\ufeff<\/p>\n

\"Eddie<\/p>\n

"We're here with our disappointment of this Rugby World Cup and you look back home, you've got probably one of the best AFL grand finals of all time and one of the best NRL grand finals of all time…<\/p>\n

"So, certainly not without our challenges. But what we can do is control what we do in our performances and we haven't done that.<\/p>\n

"And so we've got two codes doing particularly well. And then we have our performance, which is particularly disappointing to all Australians really. So we've got a lot of work to do."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
