Collingwood cult hero Mason Cox<\/a> has called for the AFL to overhaul the premiership medal system, \ufeffafter two of his shattered teammates missed out on the prized piece of silverware.<\/p>\n

Collingwood<\/a> veteran Taylor Adams<\/a> and key forward Dan McStay<\/a> were not part of the Magpies' triumphant 2023 premiership<\/a>, meaning they didn't receive medals despite playing a major role in getting the team there.<\/p>\n

But in Cox's view, \ufeffthat pair, alongside the entire squad, would leave the MCG on the last Saturday in September with a medal.<\/p>\n

According to Cox, even John Noble, who was heartbreakingly axed from the side on the eve of the finals after not missing a match since his debut in 2019, would also be honoured.<\/p>\n

Collingwood defeated Brisbane in an instant classic grand final by four points<\/a>, with Cox playing his role and receiving a medal.<\/p>\n

Some of his teammates however, weren't so lucky.\ufeff<\/p>\n

\ufeff"It is frustrating to not see them have a medal around their neck to be honest. I would change it in a heartbeat. Without them we are not in this situation," Cox told the Herald Sun.<\/p>\n

"I don't know what the ruling would be but it just seems wrong to not have them with a medal."<\/p>\n

McStay \ufeffwas ruled out of the grand final after suffering a high grade medial knee strain<\/a> in Collingwood's one-point preliminary finals win over GWS.<\/p>\n

"To have that happen (to McStay) in a prelim is f—ing shattering," Cox said.<\/p>\n

Three-time Richmond premiership captain Trent Cotchin agrees with Cox's sentiment.<\/p>\n

"They should (all get medals). It takes a village to win one and everyone should be recognised for the contribution," Cotchin said on 7Sport on the Thursday night before the grand final.<\/p>\n

In 2016, after the Western Bulldogs broke their 54-year premiership drought with a win over Sydney, coach Luke Beveridge graciously gave his premiership medal to injured stalwart Bob Murphy\ufeff.<\/p>\n

Geelong's Max Holmes also heartbreakingly missed out in the Cats' 2022 flag, suffering a hamstring injury in their preliminary final win.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Cotchin, who was a key part of Richmond's resurgence, believes that the medal represents a broader contribution across an entire season to reach the pinnacle.<\/p>\n
