Penrith Panthers<\/a> coach Ivan Cleary<\/a> has responded to suggestions his side \ufeffis arrogant as he attempts to win a third premiership in a row.<\/p>\n

The Panthers copped backlash last year for their post-grand final celebrations when James Fisher-Harris said "Parra are our sons" and that his side are "the greatest Penrith team ever"<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, Cleary said he was surprised at the claim when asked during the 2023 NRL grand final press conference. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"That's a surprise that that's the perception, yes," he replied bluntly.<\/p>\n

The coach's response then brought about cheers from the fans present which triggered Cleary to explain why he believes his side are the opposite. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"I think the fans just answered that. I like to think our team is extremely humble in the way that they approach their football," he said.<\/p>\n

"Every day they turn up to work regardless of whether we won or lost and try and get better. I think that's humility rather than arrogance."<\/p>\n

Cleary was also asked about \ufeffPanthers' blocking play of kick chasers, a tactic that's come under scrutiny since Penrith's dynasty begun.<\/p>\n

The coach responded saying "I don't know" about why the tactic is discussed before having a shot at critics. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"I think maybe everyone just reads \ufefftheir notes on the previous year and what they spoke about during that week," he said.<\/p>\n

Panthers co-captain Isaah Yeo explained it'd only be an issue if the referees intervened, expressing his belief that it's within the rules.<\/p>\n

"Yeah I think so, if they were blowing penalties then you'd probably say not," he said.<\/p>\n

"It's a weird one. I guess it's an easy write up, I feel (the media) try and find something each year and that seems to be the one this year, same as last year.<\/p>\n

"It doesn't change our focus, we're just going out there on Sunday to play our best game so I don't think much changes with us."<\/p>\n

Brisbane Broncos coach Kevin Walters<\/a> was also asked about the blocking tactic but didn't have a problem with it. \ufeff<\/p>\n
