Australian motor racing prodigy Oscar Piastri<\/a> has clinched his maiden podium in Formula 1<\/a>, finishing third at the Japanese \ufeffGrand Prix<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In his first outing \ufeffat Suzuka and just his 16th race in F1, the Melbourne product showed his skill and steely determination to stand on the podium for the first time.<\/p>\n

Piastri qualified \ufeffsecond on Saturday<\/a> to start the 53-lap race on the front row but was quickly passed by teammate Lando Norris after being pushed wide by pole-sitter Max Verstappen.<\/p>\n

"Woo, well done everyone," Piastri said over team radio after receiving the chequered flag.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Putting a difficult Singapore Grand Prix behind him, Verstappen came home in first place with the McLaren<\/a> duo forced to settle for second and third.<\/p>\n

With the victory, Verstappen also put himself in the position to claim his third consecutive drivers' championship with a podium finish in the Qatar sprint in two weeks' time.<\/p>\n

Red Bull also clinched its sixth constructors' championship with its track results after needing to outscore Mercedes and not be outscored by Ferrari by 24 points.<\/p>\n

\ufeffFive drivers failed to finish as moments of chaos rocked the circuit.<\/p>\n

Valtteri Bottas, Alex Albon and Sergio Perez all sustained damage on the opening lap, while later incidents prompted Logan Sargeant and Lance Stroll to retire their cars.<\/p>\n

While \ufeffceding second place early, Piastri repassed Norris after getting a jump on a pit stop before a virtual safety car was announced.<\/p>\n

"It's a free stop, under the virtual safety car. Brilliant news for McLaren fans and Oscar Piastri fans," David Croft said in commentary for Sky Sports F1.<\/p>\n

However, Norris again started to place Piastri under pressure before regaining second on lap 27.<\/p>\n

Speaking afterwards, Piastri was delighted with the result.<\/p>\n

"It feels pretty special, definitely. I'll remember this for a very long time," he said.<\/p>\n

"I can't thank the team enough for giving me this opportunity. There are not many people in the world that get this opportunity in their whole life and I've managed to have it in my first season.<\/p>\n

"It wasn't my best race ever," he added with a grin. "But it was enough to get a trophy at the end."<\/p>\n

\ufeffPiastri briefly dropped down to fourth after pitting for another set of fresh tyres, before executing an excellent move past George Russell to return to the podium places.<\/p>\n

"I knew I had to try and get past otherwise I was going to get stuck for a while," he said.<\/p>\n

"That one was a bit close but our pace after that was very strong."\ufeff<\/p>\n
