Fast bowler Pat Cummins has been appointed captain of the NSW one-day team as the potential successor to Tim Paine gets his first taste of experience in the top job.<\/p>\n
Cummins, who served as Australia's vice-captain throughout the summer, has long been tipped to take over the most coveted position in Australian sport at Test and one day level once Paine and white-ball captain Aaron Finch call it a day.<\/p>\n
The paceman, named man of the Test series after India's huge win at the Gabba, will captain his state in the domestic one-day tournament, with former Test wicketkeeper Peter Nevill to remain skipper of the Blues' Sheffield Shield team.<\/p>\n

"Pat is a highly respected person throughout Australian cricket, and he knows the values NSW cricket and the Blues hold dearly," said NSW coach Phil Jaques.<\/p>\n
"We have no doubt he'll prove to be a fantastic leader and I know he will also be a great role model for all Blues players.<\/p>\n
"Captaining NSW in these matches is a really good opportunity for Pat to not only demonstrate how good a leader he is, but it's a chance to show he also has the tactical nous to be a really good captain."<\/p>\n
Cummins' first game in charge is set to be on Monday against Victoria at North Sydney Oval, however he will sit out NSW's Shield clash with Victoria at the SCG, which starts on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Steve Smith and Nathan Lyon will play in both games, while Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazelwood will only play in the red-ball match.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
