Four-time premiership player Luke Hodge<\/a> has slammed the umpiring during Friday night's preliminary final, labelling it as "pathetic".<\/p>\n

The Magpies edged the Giants by one point in a thriller at the MCG<\/a> to progress to next weekend's grand final.<\/p>\n

This season, the AFL<\/a> \ufeffintroduced a fourth field umpire to improve decisions and deter undisciplined play.<\/p>\n

However, in the wake of Collingwood's slim victory, Hodge was critical of the umpires' decision-making, believing several calls slipped through the cracks.<\/p>\n

"It'll be interesting to see how many of those umpires get a job next week. If you go through a lot of those free kicks that were missed, they will not be at the MCG," Hodge told SEN's Crunch Time<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"I'm not being harsh on them, but this is a prelim final where we put in an extra umpire to make sure we don't miss anything.<\/p>\n

"We've got umpires that overrule from 70 metres away three weeks ago, but then when it comes to a prelim when one point causes a win or a loss and a season to finish for a team and the umpires put the whistle away.<\/p>\n

"A lot of those decisions were pathetic."<\/p>\n

A total of 24 free kicks (for) were paid during the first preliminary final – 12 for each side.<\/p>\n

This figure was below both teams' season average with\ufeff the Magpies receiving an average of 18.2 and the Giants' 15.5.<\/p>\n

"They did not do a good job last night," Hodge said.<\/p>\n

"They let too many go away. We put in four umpires to stop certain free kicks.<\/p>\n
