The M\ufeffelbourne Storm<\/a> were in for all money before a knock on by recalled centre Justin Olam thwarted their chances early in their 38-4 preliminary-final loss to the Penrith Panthers<\/a> at Stadium Australia.<\/p>\n

The Storm had a massive overlap just 10m from the try line before a poorly directed pass from Trent Loiero travelled behind Olam, causing him to juggle it forward.<\/p>\n

The blunder prompted a \ufefffurious response from coach Craig Bellamy<\/a> as players from both sides briefly came together for a melee.<\/p>\n

"[Loiero] just couldn't get it out in front for Justin Olam and there's a bit of push and shove," Storm great Billy Slater said in commentary for Nine.<\/p>\n

"There was a real chance there."\ufeff<\/p>\n

"It's the attention to detail," added league legend Andrew Johns.<\/p>\n

"\ufeffEvery pass has to hit the sponsor, right in front of the sponsor. In these big games you've got to take those half chances."<\/p>\n

Earlier, \ufeffOlam responded to the Panthers' red-hot start by slipping past Izack Tago in a one-on-one tackle close to the line to level the scores at 4-4.<\/p>\n

Ball-playing from Nick Meaney and Cameron Munster managed to get Olam isolated on Tago, who slipped off the tackle badly, failing one of his first defensive assignments after returning to the Panthers line-up from a shoulder injury.<\/p>\n

The Storm were unable to find a way over for the remainder of the match as \ufeffthe Panthers went on to score their biggest-ever win in a final<\/a>, spearheaded by a hat-trick to winger Brian To'o.<\/p>\n

"I don't think we can underappreciate the fact that the Melbourne Storm has made another preliminary final. It is a great achievement. I just think they've been inconsistent throughout the year," Slater said of the Storm's performance.<\/p>\n

"Thirteen errors tonight, that's more than double what their opposition has made. There are certain parts of their game that they aren't getting consistently right. They've certainly got the key position players to push for a premiership but collectively they're just not playing consistently well together as a team."<\/p>\n

The Storm finished with 14 \ufefferrors to the Panthers' eight. They also conceded a further nine penalties.<\/p>\n

Speaking post-match, Bellamy \ufeffechoed Slater's thoughts on the inconsistency which marred the Storm's season.<\/p>\n

"The game tonight was probably a small example of what we've been dishing up all year, you know, up and down, up and down\ufeff," he told media.<\/p>\n

"If we didn't know that before tonight, we learnt a good lesson tonight and hopefully we can take something out \ufeffof it for next season."<\/p>\n

The comprehensive win earns the Panthers a fourth consecutive grand final berth. The team will meet the winner of the Broncos' and the Warriors' match on Saturday night.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
