Ben Hunt<\/a> claims he still wants to captain the Dragons<\/a> despite openly admitting he would rather not be at the club.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe veteran halfback requested a release from his contract this year<\/a>, which still ties him to St George Illawarra for the 2024 and 2025 NRL<\/a> seasons.<\/p>\n

Hunt has made no bones of the fact he wants to move back to Queensland, and drew interest from the Broncos, Titans, and Dolphins upon that revelation.<\/p>\n

While incoming coach Shane Flanagan has convinced the 33-year-old to remain at the Red V for now, Hunt told Triple M radio this week it's "not my first choice".<\/p>\n

He even revealed he would consider retirement if the Dragons refuse to release him next year – but he wants to remain captain as long as he is at the club.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"It (retirement) definitely pops into your head," Hunt said.<\/p>\n

"It's an option considering I'm at the back end of my career, it's not far away, but once you retire you are done and I'm not ready to retire yet.<\/p>\n

"I have some good footy left in me, so that's not an option.<\/p>\n

"At this stage, I'm a Dragon and going into pre-season that's all I will think about.<\/p>\n

"If the club thinks that someone else can do a better job than me (at being captain), I understand and accept that… but as long as the club wants me there I'll be happy to do it."<\/p>\n

Hunt played the first 187 games of his NRL career at the Broncos and led the team to the 2015 grand final, before leaving to join the Dragons in 2018.<\/p>\n

The Red Hill club, though, already has a 33-year-old halfback in Adam Reynolds on the books, and they're on the cusp of reaching the grand final this year.<\/p>\n

The other two southern Queensland teams – the Titans and Dolphins\ufeff – are crying out for a No.7 of Hunt's quality.<\/p>\n

But Hunt concedes Gold Coast may not be able to afford him after re-signing forwards Tino Fa'asuamlaeaui and David Fifita to expensive new deals.<\/p>\n

"Any team (in Queensland) is definitely an option," Hunt said of a possible move.<\/p>\n

"Whether the Titans can fit you in is another thing. The Titans have thrown a bit of money around lately, so I don't know whether that can even happen."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
