Wallabies<\/a> coach \ufeffEddie Jones<\/a> joked fans should "throw croissants at me" after Australia's loss to Fiji<\/a> \u2013 offering a cheeky if veiled dig in response to Sonny Bill Williams'<\/a> criticism of the coach.<\/p>\n

Following the historic loss, Australia's first to Fiji in 69 years, the two-time Rugby World Cup<\/a> winner suggested Jones had been "found out" for his selection calls.<\/p>\n

Williams was particularly critical of Jones' decision<\/a> to make Carter Gordon the sole fly-half and to not have a senior player waiting in the wings to guide the No.10 gun.<\/p>\n

Gordon was pulled from the match midway through the second half.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He and Mark Nawaqanitawase got their wires crossed at one point and opened the door for Fiji to score a decisive try.<\/p>\n

"I'm going to call it how it is \u2013 we are in a high performance arena," said Williams on Stan Sport's coverage.<\/p>\n

"And sometimes you live and die by your decisions and Eddie Jones got found out tonight unfortunately."<\/p>\n

Speaking post-match, those comments were put to Jones who offered a cheeky, if thinly veiled, dig at the All Blacks legend.<\/p>\n

"When you are a television commentator, you are always right," said Jones, smiling.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"Maybe I need to become a television commentator then I'll be right all the time."<\/p>\n

Off the back of those comments, Jones backed his calls and was willing to "go through some pain" early in his tenure.<\/p>\n

"Look, we've gone with a young team, I've got no regrets at all," he added.<\/p>\n

"We are building a team for the future and we are going to go through some pain and some of the young players are going to go through some pain.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"That's generally how you have an apprenticeship. He's got plenty of support."<\/p>\n

When pressed further on his selections, Jones said, "I made the decision to go for a younger team and if that's the wrong decision then I will be held accountable for that.<\/p>\n

"But I think Australian rugby needs to move on to a younger team and I'm prepared to go through some pain to lead Australia with a team capable of doing really well in a World Cup.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"That's not to say we can't do it, we've had a bit of a setback today but that's all part of being in a World Cup.<\/p>\n

"I do remember South Africa lost a game and won a World Cup, so funny things have happened."<\/p>\n

\"Carter<\/p>\n

The Wallabies were jeered by supporters post-match, invoking memories of Jones' final few Tests leading England.<\/p>\n

"I'm a bit used to it, mate," said Jones.<\/p>\n

"After that, I probably deserved more, mate. They should be throwing baguettes, croissants at me. It's not good enough, so I deserve whatever I get, mate."<\/p>\n

The Wallabies are effectively in a must-win position against Wales to get through to the quarter-finals.<\/p>\n
