F1<\/a> rookie Oscar Piastri\ufeff<\/a> came seventh at the Singapore Grand Prix in an improved result for the Australian as Carlos Sainz Jr won the race for Ferrari.<\/p>\n

However, it was a moment off the track\ufeff leading into the race that caught the attention of fans on social media when F1 commentator Martin Brundle flagged down Piastri for an interview.<\/p>\n

"Oscar bad luck in qualifying, you've got some work to do in the race," Brundle asked.<\/p>\n

"Yeah we'll try our best and see if we can…." Piastri replied before Brundle left him hanging and started a new conversation with Alpine's Esteban Ocon.<\/p>\n

"Esteban, Esteban \u2026 happy birthday," Brundle shouted.<\/p>\n

As the commentator tried to get the Alpine driver's attention, Piastri walked off, leaving Brundle in a precarious position.<\/p>\n

On the track, runaway standings leader Max Verstappen\u2019s winning run ended at 10 races and Red Bull\u2019s at 15 \u2014 both F1 records \u2014 as Sainz Jr surprised everybody, with Verstappen fifth and Perez eighth after struggling all weekend in Singapore.<\/p>\n

Sainz started on pole position and held on with badly worn tires over several tense final laps for his second career win in F1 ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris and the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton.<\/p>\n

It was a four-car fight for the win before George Russell crashed the other Mercedes on the final lap from third position to promote Hamilton to the podium.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt under control. I felt like I could manage well and we brought it home. That was the best feeling,\u201d Sainz said after celebrating with his team as fireworks lit up the Singapore circuit.<\/p>\n

Sainz admitted after the race he had slowed down to ensure Norris stay within the one-second window that allowed the McLaren driver access to the DRS straight-line speed boost \u2014 a valuable aid in holding off the two Mercedes.<\/p>\n

\u201cCarlos was very generous trying to help me get DRS. It helped my race and also helped his,\u201d said Norris, who has placed second in three of the last six races but has yet to win in F1.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe held (Mercedes) off, we did everything we needed to do and more.\u201d Norris said he clipped the wall in the same spot where Russell later went off.<\/p>\n

Mercedes had Russell on course for second before taking a risk with a second stop for both cars in the hope of taking the win on fresher, faster tires. Russell dropped back to fourth, ahead of Hamilton, and they both passed Ferrari's Charles Leclerc but couldn\u2019t get past Norris to reclaim second.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe rolled the dice this weekend,\u201d Hamilton said after a Mercedes strategy call saw both cars stop for fresh tires late on, meaning Russell dropped back from second in pursuit of the win.<\/p>\n

Leclerc was fourth after failing to hold off the Mercedes cars on older tires, ahead of Verstappen in fifth. The champion had an eventful race after starting 11th and was briefly second on track behind Sainz, though only because almost all other cars stopped for fresh tyres. After Verstappen's own pit stop, he fought his way back through the field from 15th.<\/p>\n

Despite his worst result since Nov. 2022, Verstappen increased his championship lead to 151 points over Perez with seven races to go. \u201cEverything needs to be perfect to win every race in a season, I knew this day would come and it\u2019s absolutely fine,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
