Australian football great Mark Bosnich says the A-League<\/a> would be justified in ditching a controversial deal guaranteeing Sydney hosts its grand finals.<\/p>\n

Last December, Australian Professional Leagues (APL) signed a three-year agreement with Destination NSW, leaving football fans in other states incensed.<\/p>\n

Football bosses are now reportedly looking to scrap the $12 million deal<\/a> due to the intense backlash from fans, players and clubs alike.\ufeff<\/p>\n

That's good news for fans according to Bosnich, who said the league cannot take advantage of them.<\/p>\n

"There's always two sides to every story. I've heard from one side that the clubs were struggling at the time. They all voted and then (APL CEO) Danny Townsend went forward and said, 'This is what we're going to do', but you saw the reaction from the fans, and I don't care what you say, and I don't care what the sport is, the sport that I play is the most important sport in the world," Bosnich explained on Nine's Sports Sunday<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"The Champions League final gets four times the amount of viewers than the Super Bowl does. Remember this \u2013 and I tell this to every sport, every administrator \u2013 fans can do without football, football cannot do without its fans.<\/p>\n

"The fact that they didn't consult the fans beforehand, and the fact that basically the reaction that occurred, it's a no-brainer really. It had to be scrapped."<\/p>\n

The fallout from the decisions resulted in some of the most high-profile matches being boycotted by fans.<\/p>\n

Traditionally, the A-League has granted the highest placed finisher in the tournament the rights to host the grand final \u2013 unlike NRL and AFL, who host their grand finals in Sydney and Melbourne respectively.<\/p>\n

Those competitions have something of an imbalance of teams with the NRL having nine of its 17 teams based out of New South Wales while the AFL has 10 of its 18 teams in Victoria.<\/p>\n

The most teams any state has in the A-League is New South Wales, with five of its 12 teams based there.<\/p>\n

Although the decision hasn't been ratified yet, Bosnich said listening to the fans would be wise.<\/p>\n

"I must give kudos to the (A-League) because it's a big thing when you're in a position of power to put your hand up and admit that you made a mistake," he said.<\/p>\n

"But yeah, it was a whopper."<\/p>\n
