AFL<\/a> icon Ron Barassi's death has \ufeffbeen followed by renewed calls for the premiership cup to be named after him, with tributes continuing to pour out.<\/p>\n

Barassi's \ufefffamily announced that he'd died at the age of 87 on Saturday<\/a> due to complications from a recent fall. <\/p>\n

Having won a combined 10 premierships as a player and a coach, the Barassi name is synonymous with greatness in the AFL.<\/p>\n

Former Collingwood<\/a> premiership coach Mick Malthouse was among those to call for the currently nameless premiership cup to be named after Barassi.<\/p>\n

"I would like to think that we never forget the name of Barassi in football," he told Nine's TODAY<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"Ron<\/p>\n

"We know he's an icon. He's done so much for the game. I think if you looked up the dictionary and looked up AFL we are going to see his photograph there always. We are always going to be reminded. <\/p>\n

"I know we talk about the young people today coming through, they may just look at it and go, 'We know of Ron Barrassi but we don't know a lot about him'. <\/p>\n

"It's almost like an education. I know with my younger players I like to teach them certain things from outside the football world. This is something that should be taught in football about the impact he had on the football world. <\/p>\n

"And the Barassi name has to be used exclusively for a football event or football trophy or football something that just remembers the greatness of the man."<\/p>\n

Kangaroos great Sam Kekovich, who played under Barassi in the 1975 premiership, said it was a "no-brainer", but asked whether the honour was "big enough".<\/p>\n

"\ufeffI reckon you could rename the country after Barassi," he said on Nine's AFL Sunday Footy Show<\/em>.<\/p>\n

"He was a behemoth of a man and he was someone I was completely privileged and honoured to be coached by. <\/p>\n

"Everyone that played under him … their lives were enriched and they went on to bigger and better things. <\/p>\n

"We're going to miss the man, but through the passage of time his legacy is ensured.\ufeff"<\/p>\n

"Barassi was just everybody, he was the man for all seasons. Particularly in Melbourne, he was the man for the winter season. He was something special," former Collingwood president Eddie McGuire<\/a> added.<\/p>\n

"I really do hope, and I say this as a Collingwood person and I hope that AFL does honour Barass, and I'd like to see Leigh Matthews' name alongside him, on the premiership cup. <\/p>\n

"If not, I hope the Melbourne Cricket Club realise this man helped build the MCG, maybe he should have the members stand and Warnie on the other side, or even a street on the way to the MCG."<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
