Canadian Lance Stroll<\/a> has walked away from a massive crash during qualifying for the Singapore Grand Prix<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Canadian was on his final flying lap at the end of the first part of qualifying when he lost control on the exit of the last corner and careered into the outside wall.<\/p>\n

His Aston Martin resembled a canoe as it lay a smoking wreck in the middle of the track, leaking fluid all over the racing line.<\/p>\n

Stroll was able to climb from the car under his own steam and walk away, drawing a cheer from the crowd. Medical checks later cleared him of any injury.<\/p>\n

\ufeffStroll would later blame "dirty air" \u2014 essentially turbulence from the car ahead \u2014 and a sub-optimal out lap from the pits for the crash.<\/p>\n

"I started my lap two seconds behind one of the Alpines, which is really not ideal for aero performance," he said.<\/p>\n

"I was just not really improving my lap time much to get through to Q2 so I sent it into the last corner, tried to make up some time. It was not really doable.<\/p>\n

"It happens quickly but I know why I crashed. It was just because I wasn't going fast enough to get through.<\/p>\n

"Having the car two seconds in front is really bad for aero. You lose tonnes of downforce around here with the funnelling of the walls especially."<\/p>\n

The crash meant Oscar Piastri<\/a> wasn't able to improve on his earlier effort, relegating him to 17th on the grid for the race.<\/p>\n

Running two cars behind Stroll and following McLaren<\/a> teammate Lando Norris<\/a>, Piastri was on course to make it through to the next part of qualifying when Stroll's crash ended his run.<\/p>\n

"For me, yeah\u2026 I mean, would have been able to get through if it wasn't for that," Piastri said after qualifying.<\/p>\n

"A bit of a shame. Obviously these things are going to happen \u2013 wish it had happened about 15 seconds later."<\/p>\n

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz<\/a> will start from pole position for the second time in successive races.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It looks almost certain that Red Bull<\/a>'s unbeaten start to the season \u2013 and Max Verstappen<\/a>'s 10-race winning streak \u2013 will be broken after both cars were knocked out in the second part of qualifying.<\/p>\n

Having battled stability issues all week, Verstappen was 10th as the last cars were completing their final qualifying runs in Q2, when he was knocked out of the session by Kiwi gun Liam Lawson \u2013 deputising for the injured Daniel Ricciardo<\/a> \u2013 by just 0.007 seconds.<\/p>\n

The Dutchman will start 11th, teammate Sergio Perez 13th after a spin ruined his final lap.<\/p>\n

Verstappen said he didn't expect to be battling for pole given their struggles in practice, but was shocked at just how bad the team's performance was.<\/p>\n

"I knew that it was already going to be tough to put it on pole, but this I didn't expect," he told Sky Sports F1.<\/p>\n

"Also, I think throughout the weekend we have been struggling.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I think FP3 was not too bad, but then we tried a few more things on the car for qualifying where it tipped it over to the car being undriveable again, where car was massively bottoming out in the braking zones and every time I wanted to brake deep and hard, my front wheels were getting unloaded.<\/p>\n

"So, like I said on the radio, it was just a shocking experience because also just trying to lean on the car in low speed, just constantly no speed, no traction. Just really difficult to drive."<\/p>\n

Verstappen came from 15th on the grid to finish second in Saudi Arabia earlier this year. He said he has no hopes of similar heroics in Singapore, bringing an end to his record-breaking run.<\/p>\n

"I think anyway here is much less about actually having a good race car. It's a bit like Monaco.<\/p>\n

"You put it all on qualifying and even with (tyre degradation) it's quite difficult for anyone to really pass you, because the tyre wear is not that high.<\/p>\n

"So, it will be a long, tough afternoon. So, hopefully not too many safety cars and the race will be quite short."<\/p>\n
