N\ufeffewcastle Knights<\/a> coach Adam O'Brien<\/a> has responded to reports he's set to sign a two-year contract extension after his side was bundled out of the finals<\/a> by the Warriors<\/a>.<\/p>\n

O'Brien led his troops to a stunning turnaround this season after they sat 14th in round 19.<\/p>\n

Rumours about approaches to Michael Maguire, Justin Holbrook and Des Hasler from a third party connected to the Knights were made public during the season, however the club's resurgence – winning 10 straight games before Saturday's semi-final loss – kept O'Brien in the job.<\/p>\n

\ufeffDespite their success, the Knights coach labelled reports about an extension "premature" when asked if limited talk around it next year would remove any distraction.<\/p>\n

"Yeah I hope so\ufeff … I've got a contract next year," he said.<\/p>\n

"The reports are probably a bit premature – I'll go away and have a holiday, get away and then we'll come back and sit with the club and sort something out from there."<\/p>\n

In a do-or-die semi final clash, the Knights were still a chance after half-time when they only trailed 16-10.<\/p>\n

The Warriors used their home ground advantage to finish strong and \ufeffclaim a 40-10 victory.<\/p>\n

After finishing fifth in the regular season, Newcastle had to fight hard for an extra-time win over the Raiders in the qualifying final.<\/p>\n

Next season the Knights will be without superstar winger Dom Young, who has signed with the Roosters, \ufeffwhile Kurt Mann is rumoured to be heading to the Bulldogs. Lachlan Fitzgibbon and Lachie Miller are both off to the Super League.<\/p>\n

Despite key losses, Newcastle will welcome Jed Cartwright and Jack Cogger while Super League duo Kai Pearce-Paul and Will Pryce are also joining.<\/p>\n

O'Brien emphasised the semi-final finish isn't enough to be satisfied with next season.<\/p>\n
