Former dual-code international Mat Rogers believes coaches will be wary of fielding under-strength teams at the Rugby World Cup<\/a> after France was nearly beaten by Uruguay.<\/p>\n

The South American team came within one point of the French in the 57th minute, drawing the score back at 13-12<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Uruguay looked like they might threaten to tip the scale in their favour<\/a> until a late try by France sealed them victory \u2013 albeit, without a bonus point.<\/p>\n

France made 14 changes to its side between its first match against New Zealand and the second with Uruguay.<\/p>\n

However, teams might reconsider that having seen how close France came to losing.<\/p>\n

"The French\u2026 not as comfortable as they would have liked,"\u00a0 Rogers said on Stan Sport's Rugby World Cup Central.<\/p>\n

"It certainly might have other coaches thinking twice. As a player, I didn't like not playing. It's about keeping momentum, keeping the match fitness up. I think the more you play, and you get into a rhythm, you feel better, your confidence levels go up.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It was a bit of a challenge for the French to get over Uruguay. They played with a lot of spirit, the French. They'll be a little disappointed."<\/p>\n

Post-match, Uruguay's head coach and captain both argued that their team should play so-called tier one nations more often<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Between the last Rugby World Cup and this year's tournament, Uruguay played a top 10 ranked team just once.<\/p>\n

The South American squad were the top qualifiers ahead of Chile in their respective pools.<\/p>\n

For Rogers, the chance to play top teams more often will only grow the game for those teams still developing.<\/p>\n

"It will strengthen their international rugby," he explained.<\/p>\n

"World Cups are about pitting every nation, or the nations that qualify, against each other.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"If you can give them the opportunity to go out and play, maybe not every year, but every couple of years to test where they're at \u2014 they know what they need to work on.<\/p>\n

"Then come Rugby World Cup, we see a better competition. I don't think it hurts anyone."<\/p>\n
