Australia's<\/a> preparations for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup<\/a> have been dealt a big blow after opening batter Travis Head suffered a fracture in his left hand.<\/p>\n

Head was struck after a short ball from Gerald Coetzee in the fourth ODI against South Africa at Centurion Park.<\/p>\n

The Adelaide-born player had faced just eight balls when he was hit.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He received on-field treatment and played three more balls before retiring hurt.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Head was taken to hospital for scans where the fracture was discovered.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Further scans are expected to be taken on Saturday to determine the full extent of the injury and the recovery time.<\/p>\n

"At this stage, it's a confirmed fracture \u2013 and how long that timeframe is, we're yet to determine that so fingers crossed clearly with the World Cup fast approaching," said head coach Andrew McDonald.<\/p>\n

"I'm not a medical person, but I think it's a little bit higher up than the actual (index) finger itself. But I don't know the actual terminology.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"It's in a joint somewhere so I won't go into the medical specifics. But, yeah, a confirmed fracture and to be assessed again tomorrow (Saturday) with another scan."<\/p>\n

It all comes just 22 days out from their first World Cup match against India on October 8.\ufeff<\/p>\n

That set the tone for a match in which Australia never really factored in the chase of an enormous total set by the home side, losing by 164 runs.<\/p>\n

South Africa stormed to 5\/416 with the lion's share of those runs made by Heinrich Klaasen, who top-scored on 174 from just 83 balls.<\/p>\n

That knock included 13 fours and 13 sixes, striking at 209.<\/p>\n

Quinton de Cock got a start, making 45 before he was caught by Mitchell Marsh off of Josh Hazelwood's bowling.<\/p>\n

Reeza Hendricks made 28 before he was bowled by Nathan Ellis.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rassie van der Dussen made 62, Aiden Markram came and went for eight, and David Miller ended the innings on 82 not-out.<\/p>\n

Australia responded poorly, all out for just 252 from 34.5 overs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Alex Carey fell agonisingly short of a century, making 99 before de Cock took a screamer off of Kagiso Rabada's bowling.<\/p>\n

Tim David was the next-best batter, making 35 runs.<\/p>\n
