Rugby League Players Association<\/a> president Daly Cherry-Evans<\/a> has stated his belief that annual leave for players should be longer after Canterbury Bulldogs general manger Phil Gould's criticism of the rule.<\/p>\n

In the context of post-season international rugby league campaigns<\/a>, Gould referred to the return to play and return to train rules around players as "ridiculous" and "silly" on Nine's 100% Footy<\/em>, continuing on to say it is "unbelievable the amount of time they (the players) get off".<\/p>\n

As of 2021, players who have completed four pre-seasons or fewer received eight weeks break while those above that bracket were privy to 10 weeks<\/a>. However, speaking at the Prime Minister's XII camp, Cherry-Evans confirmed that has now changed to seven and nine weeks, respectively.<\/p>\n

In response to Gould's comments, Cherry-Evans understood the frustration of club bosses but explained the thought process behind the players' perspective. \ufeff<\/p>\n

"Our leave is obviously going to make clubs unsettled and unhappy at stages, because they want the best out of us, the clubs are paying the player to provide a service so they're always going to want to maximise that," he told Wide World of Sports.<\/p>\n

"But if you look at where the quality of footy is, how hard it is, how demanding it is on game day, yeah you've got to train bloody hard to keep up but you also need some time off when the time's right … I reckon it should be longer, especially as you get older.<\/p>\n

"I definitely don't need to be there as long as what the rules say but I've got a really good club where they understand that, they're not pushing me \ufeffto come back any earlier than what I need to do and even then they've probably gone the other way and said I don't have to come back until later than what my return date is.<\/p>\n

"I think it's a horses for courses sort of thing, I'm really glad we've got those minimum standards in there to protect us because it's a bloody hard job."<\/p>\n

If Cherry-Evans is to play in the post-season tri-nations series which ends on November 5, the halfback won't be required to return to Manly until December.<\/p>\n

The skipper is likely to have a new halves partner in Luke Brooks with him when he fronts up for the first day of training. When asked if he still believes there's enough time to get combinations right between pre-season and round one, Cherry-Evans didn't think "that's the biggest concern".<\/p>\n

"It's part of obviously playing, but trying to get your body right post-Christmas is the priority, you get fit, strong, and you build up your footy over the pre-season," he said.<\/p>\n

"But I reckon obviously you have a lot of combination stuff that needs to be worked on but it's during the year where I reckon the best stuff happens, when combinations develop.<\/p>\n

"There's nothing like a real game experience so you can do all the best plays you want at training but when you're playing with live bullets in a game, that's where you really start to figure out whether it's going to work out or not."<\/p>\n

Cherry-Evans will be part of the PM's XIII team to play against Papua New Guinea's PM's XIII in Port Moresby on September 23.<\/p>\n

A number of players in the squad are likely to feature for the Kangaroos in the tri-nations series, and despite having 13 seasons under his belt, the 34-year-old is keen to still learn from those he'll be playing with.<\/p>\n

"I'm just going over because it's an opportunity to play for Australia again, as you get older you appreciate these things more and more," he said.<\/p>\n

"It's a great playing group as well, getting the opportunity to play with some stars of the game and hopefully I'm going to selfishly learn a few things from these guys along the way.<\/p>\n

"That's why it's exciting, the opportunity to play with some of them, not just the young players but the older stars of our game. I don't think I've ever got to play alongside Cody Walker and Nicho Hynes, there's heaps of the young kids in the game, (like) Tyrell Sloan, so it's exciting.\ufeff"<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
