Australian cricketers will be forced to choose between comfort in the middle and their bank accounts after Cricket Australia made the use of a neck guard compulsory<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Almost 10 years after the tragic death of Phillip Hughes<\/a> at the SCG, it will be mandatory from October 1 for Australia's national and domestic players to wear a neck guard when facing fast or medium bowling, as announced by Cricket Australia on Thursday.<\/p>\n

On Friday, Wide World of Sports confirmed with Cricket Australia<\/a> that failing to wear a neck guard from October 1 would incur a level-one offence under the governing body's code of behaviour, and could draw a fine of up to 50 per cent of the player's match fee.<\/p>\n

\ufeffMandatory stem guards were recommended in the coroner's findings after Hughes died in November 2014.<\/p>\n

The fact Cricket Australia has now made neck guards mandatory has put a host of Australian cricketers in a difficult position, including Steve Smith<\/a> and David Warner<\/a>.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I do not and will not wear them," Warner wrote in a statement for the coroner's inquest into Hughes' death in 2016.<\/p>\n

"It impedes my neck and restricts the movement of my neck when I turn around to face bowlers. I have tried a StemGuard and it digs into my neck. It is uncomfortable and is a distraction."<\/p>\n

Smith almost paid a devastating price for not wearing a neck guard when he was struck by England quick Jofra Archer during the 2019 Ashes Test at Lord's.<\/p>\n

But the champion right-hander said in 2019 that wearing a neck guard made him feel like he was "\ufeffstuck in an MRI scan machine".<\/p>\n

"I tried them the other day when I was batting, and I reckon my heart rate went up about 30 or 40 straight away," Smith said.<\/p>\n

"I just feel claustrophobic.<\/p>\n

"They're probably going to become mandatory, so I'm going to have to get used to them.<\/p>\n

"I'm sure the more I wear them, the more I practise with them, my heart rate will come down and everything will be OK."<\/p>\n

Australian wicketkeeper Josh Inglis was asked about Cricket Australia's change to its \ufeffplaying conditions during the ongoing limited-overs tour of South Africa.<\/p>\n

"When they first started coming out and people started wearing them, I didn't like the way it rested on my neck," Inglis said.<\/p>\n

"I felt like in my stance it had taken my focus away, I was thinking about it.<\/p>\n

"But if they're mandatory, I'll have to get used to it and start training with it and start playing with it."<\/p>\n

Hypothetically, if Warner walked out to bat for the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League without a neck guard the umpires would halt the game.<\/p>\n

The umpires would not stop the game if he did that in an international match because neck guards are not mandatory in the International Cricket Council's books.<\/p>\n

However, Cricket Australia would still hit Warner with a level-one offence and he could be fined up to 50 per cent of his match fee, with loading coming into the equation.\ufeff<\/p>\n

Australia and South Africa will meet in the fourth one-dayer of their five-game series on Friday night (AEST), with the tourists leading the series 2-1.<\/p>\n
