I\ufeffn a setting much quieter and far more low-key than a Las Vegas pop concert, Cody Simpson<\/a> clinched a swimming gold medal \u2014 and his first outright national title \u2014 on Thursday night.<\/p>\n

At the Australian Short Course Swimming Championships, held at Sydney Olympic Park, the popstar-turned-swimmer rocketed to victory in the 100-metre freestyle, clocking 48.\ufeff85 seconds.<\/p>\n

The 26-year-old then\ufeff produced another top swim in the 100-metre butterfly preliminaries on Friday morning, snaring a spot in the final as the fastest qualifier as he registered 51.04 seconds.<\/p>\n

Simpson will aim for his second gold medal of the meet when he contests the 100-metre butterfly final\ufeff just after 6pm on Friday.<\/p>\n

Although he won the Australian title in the individual medley at last year's Short Course Championships, he was beaten by an American, meaning Thursday night's triumph marked his first outright national title.<\/p>\n

He flew to gold in front of an estimated 600-800 people, a crowd far smaller than the massive and adoring audiences he's drawn for his pop concerts for more than a decade, as well as the crowds that watched him at last year's Birmingham Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n

There are also very few big-ticket swimmers competing at the Short Course Championships, with Simpson, two-time Olympic gold medallist Bronte Campbell and Tokyo Olympic finalist Madeleine Gough headlining the meet.<\/p>\n

Eyeing her fourth Olympics at Paris 2024<\/a>, Campbell won gold in the 100-metre freestyle at the Short Course Championships on Thursday night, taking victory in 52.39 seconds.<\/p>\n

"If I think about the road ahead, and this whole year to go \u2026 it becomes quite overwhelming, so I just kind of take it one session at a time," said Campbell, who turned 29 in May.<\/p>\n

"I'm so proud to be here \u2026 and see this next generation come through.<\/p>\n

"I'm just enjoying being back in this pool where I've had so many great memories.<\/p>\n

"As a little kid it was never about winning Olympic gold; it was about wearing the green and gold. And the thought of going to four Games is way bigger than I could have ever dreamt."<\/p>\n

If Simpson joins Campbell on the Australian swimming team at Paris 2024, it will rubber-stamp his extraordinary move to the pool.<\/p>\n

\ufeffWhile he didn't make the cut for this year's world championships, held in Fukuoka, Japan in July, he will continue his pursuit of Paris 2024 when he competes at the World Cups in Berlin, Athens and Hungary next month.<\/p>\n

His final chance to \ufeffsecure selection for Paris 2024 will come at next year's Australian Olympic trials, scheduled for June.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
