Rugby World Cup<\/a> hosts France<\/a> have survived an all-time upset against Uruguay<\/a>, who threatened a boilover in the country's north.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Uruguay had France in their crosshairs at 13-12 before a frantic last quarter saw the men in blue edge ahead.<\/p>\n

The effort was especially impressive considering Uruguay hasn't played a top-10 team since the last Rugby World Cup in 2019.\ufeff<\/p>\n

"I don't think many people would have thought even the end score, 27-12, was a reality \u2013 but you've got to give it to Uruguay," said Stan Sport commentator Karl Te Nana.<\/p>\n

"They turned up to play, that's for sure. Made it an occasion. Job done for France, you take the win, even though it wasn't a five-pointer. You take the W and you move on."<\/p>\n

The penalty count was almost level at the end, with France conceding 16 and Uruguay just one fewer.<\/p>\n

"I think for the home team, the concern was the penalties conceded and what that did," said the former Highlanders player.<\/p>\n

"It didn't allow them to get into that rhythm, get their game plan going, and therefore, stamp their authority physically on this Uruguay team who were very brave, especially when they were under pressure."<\/p>\n

For Uruguay captain Andres Vilaseca, there was plenty to smile about despite the loss.\u00a0<\/p>\n

"I'm so proud of my team. I couldn't ask for a better team to lead, that's the truth," he said.<\/p>\n

"Today, 10 minutes away from the game, we were fighting against France, one of the best teams in the world, playing on their home ground.<\/p>\n

"I'm very proud. This is only the beginning for us.<\/p>\n

"I think we fought for the whole game, but it was key for us to keep pushing France and keep battling every aspect of the game."<\/p>\n

Uruguay take on Italy on September 21 while France will face Namibia in their third pool match a day later.<\/p>\n
