A\ufeffustralian Olympic<\/a> hero Cathy Freeman<\/a> is being honoured with a stand at Sydney's largest stadium named after her.<\/p>\n

The NSW government announced on Friday the eastern grandstand of Accor Stadium at Sydney Olympic Park will be known as the Cathy Freeman Stand.<\/p>\n

\ufeffIt's the same venue Freeman lit the flame to start the 2000 Sydney Olympics, and then won the 400m gold medal in what is one of Australia's most iconic sporting moments.<\/p>\n

Freeman is a Kuku Yalanji and Birri Gubba woman and donned the Aboriginal and the Australian flags around her shoulders after bringing 112,524 fans inside the stadium to their feet, as well as a reported 8.8 million spectators around the country.<\/p>\n

"This stadium and Sydney Olympic Park hold a truly special place in my heart and that will never change.<\/p>\n

"I hope that my story continues to inspire generations of girls and boys to chase their own dreams in sport and life.<\/p>\n

"Like the rest of Australia, I cheered on the Matildas during the FIFA Women's World Cup and I can't wait to see future generations of Australian female athletes make their mark."<\/p>\n

Freeman is the first woman to have a major grandstand named after her in NSW.<\/p>\n

\ufeff"It's about time we name a grandstand in NSW after a woman, and I can't think of a better athlete then Cathy Freeman," state premier Chris Minns said.<\/p>\n

The Cathy Freeman Stand seats close to 30,000 people while the overall capacity of Accor Stadium is 83,500.<\/p>\n

\ufeffThe grandstand sits adjacent to Cathy Freeman Park, and also houses the tunnel from which Freeman emerged before winning gold in 2000.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
